The gravity keg version of the Schneider edel-weisse they had at this event several years back remains a seminal moment for me. The bartenders just sat the giant wooden keg on the bar and poured tulip glasses directly out of the keg. The soft mouthfeel and cool cellar temperature seemed to bring out the best in this beer, changing my viewpoint of hefeweizens forever. The range of flavor in the beer was nothing short of astonishing, and much to my surprise, the low carbonation seemed to only enhance the panoply of flavor in the beer. Just an altogether amazing beer at an altogether amazing event.

Be sure to try the Andechs stuff Ron. I think this is the first year their line-up has been available in the states, and everything they make is pretty impressive. Even if the dopplebock is an early casualty (which is likely), the helles and dunkelweizen are excellent as well, and merit your attention. Have fun!

Wow, what luck! I was planning on going to Max's for the first time this Saturday. Seems I timed this perfectly. What are the events usually like there?

It varies, but traditionally, this hasn't been one of the more crowded ones. That being said, Saturday night always tends to be pretty busy at Max's, whether they have an event going that night or not. So keep that in mind. However, if you visit in the afternoon, it shouldn't be too bad.

Also keep in mind that Max's is located in a popular tourist destination area (in Fells Point, just up the street from a water taxi stop), and that they have a lot of flat screen TV's turned to various sporting events (which on a Saturday, will mean baseball games and college football games). So they get a fairly sizeable walk in crowd just from that. Add to that the fact that they have one of the best craft beer selections in the Mid Atlantic area (both on draft and in bottle), and then are also holding this special event, and it pretty much goes without saying that the place is likely to be a bit crowded when you visit.

    Good luck!

Thanks for the tips. If I go at say around like 2pm, would it be bad?

It's hard to say, but certainly it shouldn't be as bad as it would be if (let's say) you stopped by around 9:00. :-)

At 2:00, the size of the crowd will likely depend more on what sporting event(s) are on TV at that time. This seems to be a fairly light college football weekend, but on the other hand, the O's are still in the hunt for a wild card berth, and they're playing the Rays at 1:00 that day. So there likely will be a number of folks stopping by to catch the O's on TV. Still, relatively speaking, 2:00 is proably a very good time to stop by.

That should be a good time. Explore the bar, 1 bar upstairs, 3 downstairs. If you're into beer plan on staying awhile, as well as the 60 German drafts there will be 30-40 other killer drafts. The German beers you can get 10oz pours for about $3, the other drafts you can get 5oz pours for varying cost so you can try lots of beer. The food at Max's continues to improve and the festival food menus have been interesting and tasty the past year or so, lots of good food I'm Fells Point but sometimes it's just hard to leave Max's. Word has it there will be a gravity keg of unfiltered, unpastuerized Pilsner Urquell if it arrives. Enjoy, I know you will.

That is very, very true (regarding the food), and I try to give Max's props for this every chance I get (hence this post). When I originally received my second transfer to Baltimore back in 04, the food as Max's was about as uninspired as it gets. The wings were the only thing I'd get, as they were reliably good (for wings) every time I was there. "Meehhhh" pretty accurately described everything else on the menu back then. However, over the past couple of years, the menu has really expanded, and increasingly I've found myself ordering the crab sliders, the fish and pork tacos, greek nachos, the steamed/boiled shrimp, etc.

I can't over emphasize this... the management at Max's is proactive and they pay attention when people complain or otherwise find them lacking. Aside from the expanded menu, the lighting is better (lots of complaints about a dark, dingy look), the bathrooms are almost always clean and fresh smelling (I don't even want to discuss what they were like the first time I visited back in 2001), and they've responded to complaints about the lack of table service (they don't provide it, but now they have large signs over the bar explaining their policy regarding the service there).

The only down side to all these positive changes, is that Max's has become incredibly popular, and the days I'll drop by and find an empty bar are extremely few and far between. What can I say, Max's is great!

Glad I read this, was going to stop in Max's anyway Saturday night. Heading to the WVU v MD game, so I'll be hitting Max's during prime time, always wanted to hit this event in the past.

Was there from 2-6 yesterday not bad for crowds, beer is fantastic, super fresh, $3.50 for a ten ounce pour. Lots of flavor variety this year. Damn O's kept me up late after a long day and lost, trying to get motivated for day 2.

My local has it on tap right now as well. I hoisted one in your name Ron. Delicious stuff!

Hope Max's still has it on tap if you decide to head down tomorrow.
