What are the most melon forward hops you've had experience with, whether you brewed with them yourself or came across them elsewhere? Single hops, hop combos, whatever. Just lookin to brew a straight up melon bomb.

In my experience Calypso was a melony sumbitch but left some odd herbal/perfumey harshness which wasn't very appealing (this was an all Calypso Pale per the requirements for a competition). Perhaps use it in combo with others and in lesser amounts?

    Thanks all,

    Kyle

Tasted a beer made with those, and yes, they smell/taste like melons.

Thought about mashing with musk melons yet? Caramelized melon under the the broiler. I'm counting on you to make this happen.

Good to see you on the forum, chief.

I get strong watermelon notes from El Dorado hops. Their aroma and flavor come across a little artificial to me though, like a Jolly Rancher (just one man's opinion). I have had decent IPAs made with El Dorado, but those had a blend of hops as opposed to being single hopped with El Dorado.

Huell mellon hops, have considered it but have never brewed with them. Someone here may be able to chime in on their experiencing brewing with them. I'd be interested to hear it as well.

Made a pale ale with Hull Melon. Very subtle flavor so if you want strong Melon your gonna need a lot. I used 4 oz in the final 10 minutes and flame out. And the flavor was subtle. Got more of a candy flavor off them. Slight strawberry. Hope that helps

I brewed a single hop with huell melon to test them out the other day, i got very bitter flavors, no real melon to me. Had some high hopes but they were kind dashed. To me atleast, might work well alongside something else but i think alone are too subtle to be noticed

I've got a "German" saison aging at the moment with Hull Melon and Hallertau Blanc, both smelled excellent as-is. Hull was melony and Citra-like, Blanc was in the Mosaic/Nelson family.

I did a pale ale last summer with a combo of Hull Melon and Mandarina Bavaria that turned out great. It was like straight cantaloupe although more in the nose than the flavor. It is quite subtle so you are going to need a lot to really make it a bomb.

When did you add them, and how much did you add?

I did a 3 gallon batch, adding .5oz at 10 and 5, 1oz at flame out and a 2 oz dry hop. They really didnt even have a nice aroma when i opened the package. They were about 6 months old when i used them, but were vacuum sealed from the vendor. Could have been a bad batch considering what i've been hearing from others

The Blanc has the cheap white wine taste I do not care for, just not as much as Nelson.

I do like white wines, just not cheap white wines.

Perhaps Belma hops as well, if you buy some when they are back around.

Thank you! I was just looking at them and from your descriptions I will hate them.

Not a hop, but I get a significant melon note from Mangrove Jack's Belgian Ale yeast when used in lowish gravity worts.

"That" flavor seems to be one of the more hit-or-miss flavors out there. I have a few friends who won't drink anything with Nelson... I love it!

Agreed. Some hate Simcoe due to the cat pee, some hate fuggles due to the dirt (earthy) taste. We all have our likes and dislikes.

Cashmere hops are supposed to have a strong melon note. Difficult to find in small quantities right now.
