I was miss informed, here you need to have your prices listed and available on request, it doesn't need to be on the menu but if someone asks for a break down of what you are selling you must show how much each drink is (before or after taxes). Frequest spot checks are done from the licenced inspectors to ensure you are not doing something that would put your license in jeopardy.

Bosses also do not like if a server is skimming off the top or giving product away, so if a server is pulling numbers out of a hat or ass and charging patrons then if they cared about their reputation that server wouldn't be around long.

Quick question. I coudn't honestly tell you what the places I frequent charge for a pint or growler fill. Because there typically isn't a pricelist. I just order and shrug/wince when I get the bill. I know different beers command different prices, but how common is this in your area? Thanks.

I know my usual bar doesnt post prices. That reminds me of a couple weeks ago when the bars downtown had bourbon county on tap. We ordered a glass of it and when we got our checks it was 13$ for a 10oz pour, I about shit myself seeing that.

I searched "no pricing" in the forums and didn't see this thread, so the one I started was merged. Thanks mods. For the record, this does happen frequently enough that it peeves me, because prices are all over the map in Southern California.

Even worse still is when places refuse to list the actual beers they do serve and get all huffy when you follow the directions on the menu that read "Ask your server about additional selections". Case in point, Red Robin in York PA. Ok, if it weren't for the fact that your neon sign on the front of the building says "Gourmet Burgers AND BREWS" I probably wouldn't expect much. But then when ask to see the beer list you find out there is none and you get the old "Well, what are looking for?" lazy ass response. *sigh*

I own a restaurant (not geared toward D-Bags). I have my Seasonal brews listed on a chalkboard, and only have the ABV beside them. Mostly because there isn't enough room for the price on the same line. I do however, have a table list with all the regular beers (ranging from 4.25 to 14 bucks a pop) which includes ABV and price for all of them. A whole bar/restaurant without pricing...unacceptable...especially if you're carrying high end beers.

If I am at a place that has no prices on the menu, I ask the price. If it is higher than I wish to pay, I order still tap water on ice.

Wow...I think I've only seen this once..been to many places in several states, and I always remember seeing the prices for beer. Just weird thinking that's not the norm.

old thread, but no point in starting a new one if it exists.

Drives me nuts when prices aren't listed. I'd like to live in the world some of you are in that always have prices listed. I have encountered this quite a bit. From crappy bars, to really nice places, restaurants everywhere.

I often really hate asking, because I don't want to know the price of one of them, I want to know the price of all of them. And if we're out to dinner and I am in the mood for a beer, I don't want sticker shock when the bill comes. When I am thinking something should be around $5 and it is $8, just gets on the nerves. Which is why I don't order beer when we go out a lot, I don't like the markup on it, but that it another story.

AND that is how I ended up with a $12 glass of cider at a place. I had pretty much everything else on the list, so I tried something new. Thank god I only had one. Got the bill and thought it wasn't mine...

Technically if they don't put a price on the menu and you order something, you can just pay whatever you want(only time you can't is if they put market price). You likely won't be welcome back but I wish people would do this and then pay a really low price. If enough people did that places would start listing the price of everything. IMO not listing a price is dishonest since they could TRY to charge you one price and someone else another.

Also a pet peeve when a waiter recites the specials without stating how much they are

Yeah I don't think that is a law... You might be able to skirt it into some classification of a law and try to prove it, but I don't think that is a standard rule. (Edit, just noticed you were in Australia, so maybe law for you guys, but not for us)

Tons of bars don't post prices for cocktails etc, there would be no way to make a menu with every drink.

In contrast I love hopcat (although not always their prices) they list the beer, abv, price and have an icon system for what kind of glass it comes in. Snifter, lager, tulip, pint. Talked to them at one point about maybe adding ibu.

    Bullshit.
I am pretty sure I have never been to a bar or restaurant that I could not afford any beer on the menu.
I am sure I have been to many that I would not pay what they wanted for a beer.
I will always ask the price before I order.

The day that we we feel too awkward/cheap to ask if we are being ripped off is the day we lose! Who cares? Ask what it costs! Would you knowingly overpay for something just because you are embarrassed? Screw that! If they don't openly show prices, they don't want you to know. When was the last time you went to the bottle shop and saw no prices???
