Being good friends with brewers has it's perks. I had a chance to try this last Friday pre-carbonation. Holy crap it was awesome. Along the lines of Trillium or Tree House IPAs. Super juicy for sure. The Hopyard Series will continue every month just as an FYI (new IPA of some sort every time). With Ocelot, Aslin, RAR, and now Manor Hill, who needs those others from the NE! ;-)

It's even farther from DC, and there seems to be zero discussion about it (even in the South-Atlantic thread), but I'd put Pen Druid (in Sperryville) up there at the Ocelot-Aslin-Right Proper level. In case you missed it, they were on the cover of BA Magazine last month (and were one of their "Top 33 Best New Breweries in the US" picks). Worth the day trip!

Greetings from the west side. Finally get to visit your city and wondering if there's an easier way to narrow down 2 brewery visits in Metro than reading back all threads. Just want best of the best, no matter the style

That's going to be very difficult since the "best" breweries are in the Burbs. That being said the "best" breweries are Aslin and Ocelot. Aslin is a 5-minute cab from the last stop on the silver line. Ocelot is about a 15 minute cab from Aslin. It will take you an hour + if you take Metro, but those two are the best. To each their own.

A drive is fine, no problem. Aslin and Ocelot it is. Thank you.

Mind throwing a couple stand-out bars in the city my way?

Churchkey (can be expensive/crowded, but consistently great selection), The Sovereign (if you want Belgian beers - including probably some Loons), Meridian Pint and Pizza Paradiso are all good options.

I live in the burbs, where everything is a drive. However, if I were in DC, no way in hell would i drive all the way to Ocelot or Aslin for beer. They're good, but not that good. And unless you specifically only like hoppy beers (which Ocelot and Aslin specialize in), Right Proper and Bluejacket are every bit as good or better than Aslin or Ocelot. And they're both Metro-accessible.

+1 for Pen Druid. Lots of barrel aged, spontaneous fermentation brews. They are doing great things.

Yeah, i would recommend a more established brewery like Right Proper or 3 Stars or Meridian Pint over them. Better selection, better hosting room. I really liked visiting 3 Stars. I really liked their tasting room. I got a flight of 4 5-oz pours of high gravity beers for like $10. They are in DC city limits, but their location is very inconvenient and their hours are more limited. And whereas Right Proper and Bluejacket serve food - good food - unless there is food truck outside there is no food at 3 Stars. The same goes with Ocelot and Aslin too. No food. Just beer and maybe a food truck.

And FWIW, 3 Stars is my wife's favorite local brewery. She is a really big fan of their saisons, porters and stouts. hazy juice bombs are my current favorite style, so Aslin is my new favorite.

    Passion Fruit IPA

    16 oz. Cans
    $16/4-pack, $75/case

    Hidden Hopyard Series: Volume 1
    American IPA (7.0% ABV)
For our first installment in this new series, we created a
68 IBU Australian IPA dry hopped with Galaxy, Topaz, and Enigma hops.
The result is a very fruity and citrusy nose that is complemented
by waves of tangerine, melon, & passion fruit flavors.

    Passion Fruit IPA
    American IPA (6.8% ABV)
For this limited seasonal release, we decided to take our
Mosaic hop forward flagship IPA and add a great deal of
passion fruit puree post fermentation. The resulting beer will
provide you with a big juicy mouthfeel accompanied by tropical
fruit and a firm hop bitterness in the finish.

I have it in a crowler and will drink this weekend. Friend bought it for me while I was away for work. He said it was good, but not mind the hops good.

I see that this thread is largely Aslin and Ocelot, which is to be expected, but I am really digging the Champion Fruit Basket as well. Solid beer and they flew off the shelves.

Feel comfortable skipping Bluejacket. It'll be out of your way and not worth the effort. I appreciate what they are trying to do, but the beer and food both are average at best.
