The more I read about Mexican Cake from Westbrook, the more I want one. I'm trying to learn more about the rarity or trade value before posting an ISO:FT. I see some growler posts out there but I'm not big on growler trades and I'm not sure if the growler value is comparable to a bottle offer. Looking for opinions to understand how much offer is fair. Thoughts?
I've probably traded close to twenty 32oz growlers and half-a-case or so of bottles. The over-whelming majority of feedback I've received has been favorible towards the draft (growler) version than its bottled equivalent (myself included). IIRC, a number of caps on the bottled version weren't properly secured before distribution shipment so that may have played a role in the bottle format's inferior reviews. An abbreviated list of beers I've recently received in return include: Hammerhead, KDS/BBOMB, Syx, Arctic Devil, Event Horizon, etc. FWIW, only ~1500 bottles were produced while a substantial amount of the brew being was offered in draft format and is still trickling out slowly around the state.
Cant really tell you what it takes to land one but I can let you know what wont land one, lol. I put up an ISO last week for MC and Evil Twin Imperial Biscotti. I dont really have any type of limited stuff but have access to a decent distro. I came up crickets on the Mexican Cake, but as a comparison, received several BMs regarding the Biscotti.
I've never had the bottled version but I got a 32oz growler by trading $4$ off the shelf locals. Now those bottles were from a local brewery with a tiny distribution footprint and he was ISO, but still very easy to get for me. It was shipped in high heat and then sat in my fridge for 2 days. It was delicious.
I responded to an ISO for Custom Brewcrafter's beer. It's a small brewery that mainly brews house beers for local bars (like a plum brew and wasabi brew for a sushi place). They're also the contract brewer for Three Heads. Over the last few years they began bottling their own beers. He was in NC and I have a few trading partners from there, so I left what I would receive open ended. I honestly was just trying to help him out with beer that was easy to find in Rochester. I was rewarded with a growler of Mexican Cake (and some other stuff).
It was Westbrook's First Anniversary beer, and has only been made once. Given popularity I suspect it will be brewed again. FWIW, I believe the rest of MC still at the brewery is sitting in barrels...
