I'm going to be in Detroit Thursday and Friday and am planning on bring back a growler of DRIPA for a bottle share on Saturday. I have a Kuhnhenn growler but I'd like to use one of my stainless growlers (less worry when checking the bag). What are the laws in Michigan regarding growlers? I've used it there before, but I know the laws have changed since then.
By law, there is no issue with filling outside brewery growlers. You are more likely to run into issues with individual brewery policy. I am not certain what Kuhnhenns policy is.
I don't think they do growler fills of DRIPA at all, actually. Been there a couple times and I think I remember them saying that. I'm sure someone can confirm or deny this though....
They will fill it and throw one of their stickers on it. I've filled plenty of other breweries growler there and they do growlers of Dripa as long as it's not running low.
This was actually a question posted on their Facebook page. Someone asked: " I'm sure you are asked this a lot, but do you only fill Kuhnhenn growlers?" Response " We will fill any growler, as long as it does not exceed 128 ounces and is resealable. If it is not our growler, we are required by law to affix a label onto it with our brewery name, the name and ABV of the beer, and the Surgeon General's Warning. Picked up a growler of DRIPA last week. Good luck!
I had a Shorts howler filled with DRIPA a few weeks back for around $9.00 or $10.00. Not only did they sticker it over the shorts logo, they use vacuum caps and seal it with shrink wrap. As soon as I got home I took the sticker off and slapped it on my beer fridge. Free stickers for us cheap asses!!!
For any who are concerned, the sticker is a gum-backed adhesive label that comes off easily with water. My point is, don't worry it won't mess up your growler with sticker residue.
Here is a speadsheet that shows who does what. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1fe8eCt3zeaTRyMKKXnAfhnZkI95PvogAe73j9Naq20A/edit#gid=0
Kuhnhenn had a price on a growler fill of DRIPA just a few weeks back. Other than being 'expensive', they certainly do it. They also were filling other brewery's growlers all night and placing a sticker over the logos. This was also the first time I ever saw a brewery place shrink wrap over the tops of the bottles (my wife pointed this out to me as she asked why they had a heat gun behind the bar). They also filled a few 32oz during our time there.
I like this response because it is actually an accurate statement of the law. Most places do not realize they need to put the sticker on.
Thanks for the information. I had used the stainless growler at Kunhnenn before and they didn't put a sticker on it but that was before the growler laws changed so I just wanted to make sure. Looks like I'll be returning with a sticker on my growler
