I started this thread as a way for us to communicate our favorite breweries or stores in our respective areas to one another. I know not all breweries distribute or even can their beer. Some probably aren’t listed on here in “places”. Some smaller ones may not even have a website. I for one am just hitting my stride on actually relying on breweries to get new beer by doing pickups and there’s really no where I’m not willing to travel if you can recommend it to me positively. Hopefully we can all share our hot spots with each other and everyone can get to try new things without scouring the internet looking for new places to try. Cheers!!

I’ll kick it off with my local spot that is well known to locals but doesn’t have a huge online presence nor marketing campaign. Oppermans Cork and Ale on Midland rd. in Saginaw. They stock over 600 types of beers. 1200+ liquor and wines. The beer is all the latest and greatest from Michigan breweries including hard to find stuff and limited releases as well as a ton of imports(obviously UK, Germany, Belgium, but also Japan and others). The out of state selection is somewhat limited to the bigger names but there is a few hidden gems if you have time to peruse their many aisles and coolers. They have their own brands of wine and whiskey and their selection of high end scotch and tequila is second to none. They also have a walk in cigar humidor and many Michigan made snacks to boot. If you’re a down stater headed to the UP, or if you’re from Northern MI and are headed down 75, this would be a great place to stop off and check out if you have a minute. Probably the best selection I’ve seen in the Great Lakes Bay Area and I’ve been all over.

    Cheers!

First, I'll remind you about Territorial Brewing in Battle Creek (Springfield) that I mentioned in the German beers thread that you started. Mentioning them again gets them some notoriety that they deserve for the quality of the German-style beers that they produce.

Horrocks is a 3-store chain based in Lansing, with other stores in Grand Rapids and Battle Creek. It's a true experience to shop at one of their stores because they are so unique with the varied product lines that they carry. They are a garden center, fresh food market, deli, beer and wine store, and on and on. The store in Battle Creek will soon expand its inventory because they just announced that they have purchased the former Penny's building at the local mall

Lastly, Mega-Bev is a liquor, wine and beer store based in Battle Creek, but with 8 store locations now in the greater Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo and Battle Creek areas. The largest store is probably the one on West Main Street in Kzoo, but their newest store is in GR (Kentwood) and I have not been there, although I know the building is large. There is a deli/pizzeria in that store.

Territorial is a hidden gem, but the other two businesses are already well known to many beer lovers.

I’ve since looked up Territorial since you mentioned it to me and I’m definitely interested in making my way out there this summer. I’ll let you know when I plan to head that way and we can get that beer. As far as Horrocks, I’ve definitely seen the name thrown around on the site and will eventually check them out as well. Is the Battle Creek store relatively close to Territorial?

Has anyone been to Seedz in Union Pier yet? It didn't open until after summer last year so didn't get to make it but plan to this year, probably next weekend.

Please report back. Used to spend much of my summers in Union Pier and now visit a handful of times a year. Looking forward to a week there in July, and would love to know whether Seedz is worth the time.

Everything in Battle Creek is kind of close. There is probably 4-5 miles between them and that's just a ten minute drive around here. Both are just off the same main drag with only a half dozen stop lights. Then Horrocks is just off I-194 and two miles to I-94 for ease of access.

I'll be interested in what you have to say. I ran out of time on my last trip to the area.

Thanks for the info Goose I’m gonna have to make my way out there. The only time I was even in Battle Creek was back and forth from Wisconsin. I had no idea it was such a small area.

From the Seedz website. Anyone ever heard of this slow pour technology? I guess I have to order 2 beers at a time. One to drink while the other is being poured!

Only for pilsners. I've not heard about it for other styles.

I’ll have to do some more research on it I guess. I don’t know how a beer can be optimal temperature pouring it that way.

There should be some good info in this thread:

Edit: Don't know why I can't paste the full address of the thread. It's on the second page of the Europe forum and the title is "Is slow pour a thing now?" (or something like that).

Yeah I was about to reply that your comment was empty so thanks for the edit.https://alesessions.com/2018/02/21/why-a-slow-pour-pilsner-will-change-your-life/
I did look it up though and read this article and it basically boils down to head retention and time to warm from what this says. I for one have never had a beer that I have found to benefit from being “just over room temperature” as this article states. Maybe 50 degrees, okay, I can see why that would change flavors. But room temperature? That’s not for me personally, but maybe I just haven’t had the right beer yet? Maybe you can opine on that. And as far as head retention, I’m a can and bottle drinker so I have absolutely no insight as to the enjoyment one may gather from a “settled head”.

edit:https://www.beeradvocate.com/community/threads/is-slow-pour-a-thing-in-germany.619611/ here’s the thread you wanted to post.

I have not experienced a slow-pour pilsner, but I I'm thinking that up to 60 degrees would be my limit to enjoy anything hoppy, whether a pics or IPA, etc. I've drunk warm, hoppy beers as my glass warms up, but I didn't enjoy them as much as chilled.

You don't drink from a glass or mug? A big part of enjoying any beer (except maybe the macros) is to see and smell the beer, both of which are not possible when drinking from a can or bottle. (And smelling is a large part of experiencing the accurate taste of anything being consumed.) I've got to get you to change your ways.

It can be done. I’m still new enough to craft beer that my preferences can be swayed. I guess the whole reason I never switched to a glass is because I spent so long drinking macro from the can or bottle and never thought twice. I still haven’t thought twice. I do see most on here are drinking from a glass though.

I'd bet that 99% of BA members pour their beer into a glass or mug, and the other one percent do it sometimes (unless camping, at the beach, etc.) Try it, you'll enjoy your beers more.

You stole my answer! I live a couple miles from Horrocks in Kentwood and it’s an absolute gem of a store. Along with the best beer selection in West Michigan the meat department is top notch and the fresh flowers are pretty damn awesome as well.
