Everything Speciation does is open or foeder fermentation & can conditioned so pricing will be higher than most "sours" out there. $8/can is completely normal, I am a Speciation member & that is what I pay them for Incipient cans which comes out to ~$12.50 for 750ml bottle if the still released that format

Thanks for the input. I’m happy the store wasn’t gouging as I had expected. As I mentioned, I was “sticker shocked”. I’ve drank many quality beers, and never paid that price. Cheers.

Update on my 2 day trip to the Petoskey area which included a trip to Boyne City, and Charlevoix. Both a stones throw away:

    4 breweries Visited:
Stiggs Brewing Co.: Food was killer; fresh, local ingredients. Atmosphere and service were awesome. Beer was good, nothing special.https://www.stiggsbrewingcompany.com/
Biers Inwood Brewery: Food was available in the form of homemade pizza, didn’t have any. Atmosphere/location was awesome. Very farm to table feel. Brewery is an old house basically gutted and turned into a brewery/bar. About 5 miles out of downtown Charlevoix in the center of a field overlooking the woods. Most of the seating is outdoor. Very relaxed vibe. Beer was absolutely amazing.http://biersinwoodbrewery.com/
Mackinaw Trail Winery: 2 miles out of downtown Petoskey in the middle of a vineyard as wine is clearly their bread and butter. Building looks great with a gabled roof and huge arch windows. A step inside takes you to a winery design with textured walls and their awards displayed proudly amongst their wine. They did have about 12 beers, 6 of which I tried and really enjoyed. Some food was served, didn’t have any.https://www.mackinawtrailwinery.com/
Petoskey Brewing: Atmosphere here is a typical brew pub. Food was great, beer was awesome. Definitely the most well known and widely distributed brewery in this area. Service was okay, not great. Beer is definitely the highlight here.https://www.petoskeybrewing.com/

Overall, the 4 of these breweries come highly recommended by me albeit for different reasons. If you are in the area I would say they are worth a stop as they are all within 30 minutes of one another and offer delicious beer and good company. Cheers

Stiggs and Biers-Inwood are two that are on my list to visit, so thanks for your report on them.

For the Grand Rapids folks. HOMES is making a drop at Rishis. I believe this is the first time they’ve made a store drop and maybe some of you haven’t had a chance to try much of their stuff due to proximity to the brewery.

caveat: I messaged them on Instagram to ask when this stuff was canned because it is from the June 21st brewery drop. I was told all canning was done a few days before presale on the brewery drop. Therefore, all of this stuff is well over a month old. It all begins to make sense why they’re sending it to a store because they are more than likely going to be releasing their new cans if not this Monday, then next Monday.

So, buy at your own risk. Quite honestly, I wouldn’t be paying 20$ a 4 pack for 6 week old beer.

[IMG] For any of my Saginaw-Bay-Midland neighbors, Barrel and Beam has finally hit Oppermans Cork n Ale. I was able to obtain some of this on my trip to Petoskey a couple weeks ago but never had a lead on it for our area. They make some of the best farmhouse style beers in the state as far as I’m concerned and they recently started canning and theres 4 varieties available now at the store I mentioned. Cheers and enjoy.

Who here is getting “Hop Butcher” at their store? and if you could; please share the location. Im sure it’s not lasting more than hours, let alone a day or two but I recently saw M4 is getting a limited amount and putting it out in certain areas, albeit not in my town. Any info would be appreciated.

I'm fully onboard with the Seedz love from earlier in the thread. The taplist when I visited was wonderful and reminded me of breweries like Suarez Family out east with the emphasis on lagers, style diversity, and reasonable ABVs. The hoppy cans I took home hit the spot too. I love that the house pale is Cascade/Chinook which is refreshing in today's beer world and Unfamiliar Faces: Citra reminded me of when I first started getting excited about Citra hops ~8 years ago.

My only "complaint" was the no flights rule if only because I wanted to try everything in a short amount of time but I get it. On previous occasions when I'd stay in the area I'd be most excited to go to Transient if only because of their reputation, but Seedz is the first brewery I plan on hitting next time I visit.

We got a Hop Butcher drop through M4 in Grand Rapids this past week. I picked some up at Horrocks but assume some other spots in West Michigan got it as well. For what it’s worth, I got mine Tuesday on delivery day but stopped in yesterday and there was still some left on the shelf.

    Cheers!

I mostly agree with what you say about the brewery and its beers. I also agree with your complaint about no sampler flights being available. (They seem to mock flight drinkers by having #noflights as their Wi-Fi password.) And they don't even offer half-sized pours to have a chance at some variety.

I hadn't picked up on this lack of flights in previous comments about this brewery in this forum, and for me it was the end of the day with 100 miles to drive to get home after a 2-day pub crawl so additional large pours were not a possibility in order to explore further. I also didn't like their American Lager, so I'm in a little bit of doubt about how quickly I might try to return at a better time.

Enjoyed reading through this thread and planning even though this year’s trip to Traverse City ultimately didn’t include any better beer stops than meijer’s. Visited during some severe weather that wound up closing half the stuff we tried to visit anyways.

Made up for it when staying at the in-laws for a week right in between both Opperman’s. Thanks for the tip @BigIronH !

One had a smaller beer selection but more barleywines which is ok by me.

Nice haul brother. Oppermans really can’t be beat in our part of the state. It’s actually a bit of a honey hole as far as I can tell when compared to store that are alike in the area. I’m guessing the one you found favorable in regards to beer was the Saginaw store, which happens to be the one I visit most often.

I posted this in another thread but this also may work too and if its in the wrong threat then I apologize.

I will be going to detroit for the Lions/49ers game week 1 and am going to be staying in downtown Detroit. If I wanted to go to one area for breweries, which would you recommend and are any of them walkable from downtown detroit? We would like to just park the car and explore. Or any bars that'll have a nice taplist of local brews. It looks like there is a detroit beer exchange right next to my hotel. Any help would be welcomed!

You have several choices in that area, depending on where you’re staying. Founders is just a couple blocks from Little Caesars arena. Atwater Brewery is just a few minutes from Founders, probably a 20 minute walk. Then you have Brew Detroit just a couple minutes from either Founders or Atwater. A centrally located Eastern Market brewing is also in that general area. 5 to 10 minutes from all these places is Greektown Hotel and casino, which is an awesome place to stay and have fun. Collect Beer bar is 5 minutes from the hotel I mentioned.

Really, this area is loaded with good bars, food, breweries, and things to do. You really can’t miss. Any bar you go to in this area is likely to have at least a few local taps. If you’re interested in traveling outside the city, your options expand. I hope this is a good start for you. Cheers.

I would also add that a short distance down the Cass Corridor from Founders is Motor City Brewing Works. Their beer and pizza is worth trying, there's also a Hopcat right there, along with a Jolly Pumpkin and Jack White's record store, Third Man Records, which I saw totally worth checking out. I also see there's a Saucy Brew Works not far from the downtown area.

Awesome! Finally somewhere local. The store I go to in Frankenmuth told me they havent been able to get their hands on anything and that most likely everything was going to Detroit or Grand Rapids, which I found believe-able just because obviously that’s where most of the larger stores are. Thanks for the tip brother.

@Zaphog I made the trip to Ideal today. I didn’t see any HB but they do have a pretty nice selection there. I didn’t end up grabbing anything but on my way home I went by Oppermans which is the store I visit most frequently and low and behold, they had it there. I’ve actually been walking right by it for a long time because they had some stuff sitting there from February which I obviously did not get but had I noticed it at the time they got it, I certainly would have gotten what I could. Anyways, it’s there. Cheers all.

Freddie’s party store in Owosso I have found to be a real honey hole after last night. They had several packs of maple Mackinac fudge as well as KBS espresso and some other hard to find beers I haven’t found at the other bigger stores. Definitely worth checking out if you’re in the area or passing through. I added it to places last night, pending approval. Huge liquor selection as well.
