What kind of beer should, or could I expect to get in this area? I'm from NJ, and wondering what I should look forward to getting that I cannot get here.
Both kinds, Country and Western. Really, though, there are several great Michigan beers that aren't readily available in NJ. As breweries go, Kuhnhenn, Bell's, and Short's all stand out. Odd Sides and New Holland also put out some good beers.
Oddside is really impressing me this year. Honestly it depends where you are going in Mi. Shorts is excellent as well. I think if you tell us where you will be that we can direct you better. Looking for good bottle shops? Breweries? Restaurants with solid taps?
If you can go to kuhnhenn in metro Detroit you should. Dragon Mead is pretty cool. Where are you staying?
Check the seek a brew distribution map to compare NJ vs MI. Michigan has some of the greatest breweries in the US! If you are in the Detroit area, definitely stop by Kuhnhenns (in Warren), Farmington's New Brewery (love this one), Atwater in Grosse Pointe .. it's an old Church!, DragonMead is well liked in Warren. If you can't decide, stop by HopCat on Woodward in Detroit -- over 100 local beers on tap!
