Looking for recommendations for porters/stouts accessible in MI/Metro Detroit with bitter tones (i.e., burnt coffee).

I am looking for something similar to Dark Horse's Thirsty Trout Porter or New Holland's Dragon's Milk, which I prefer over other MI brews such as Founder's Porter and Kuhnhnenn's Penetration. Generally, would prefer bitterness forward over alcohol.

Thanks for all of the recommendations and suggestions.

Try the tres blueberry stout from dark horse. Very roasty/bitter, a little drying and great subtle blueberry flavor/aroma. At about 7.99/4 pk it's a great value as well.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll be on the look out for it. I generally enjoy Dark Horse beers.

I wouldn't say dragons milk is more bitter forward. Love the bourbon taste in it and more sweet. The IBU is only 31. One of my favorite beers.

Tres blueberry is good. More blueberry on the nose than on the taste. Liked it enough to go and get the BBA version of tres blueberry yesterday. Haven't tried one yet though. Put it in the fridge, but after the rest of what I sampled yesterday there, gotta take it easy today.

Plead the 5th is good too, more smokey and bitter. But the 11% hits you.

I had been trying to just buy a bottle or two of something, yet somehow my basement filled up with dark horse stuff...

It's been a while since I've had it, but I recall Bell's Kalamazoo Stout being pretty roasty.

Not sure if it makes it that far south, but Blackrocks North Third Street Stout is a tasty and roasty Michigan offering.

I don't believed it's bottled but it is on a lot o tap list, Peck's porter from Tapistry. It has a nice bitter bite with a little smoked malt flavor mixed in

Founders Porter. It is the best readily available porter in Michigan.

Not a Michigan porter but is available- Deshutes Black Butte Porter. Not sweet, more the classic English style. Great Lakes Eddy Fitz Porter is also in the same lane.

Check out the New Belgium Portage that just came out. It's by far the roastiest porter I've ever had. Has a fair amount of earthy hop notes as well.

This is what stopped me initially from making a recommendation ... I think OP is tasting things differently than I do.

That said my holy trinity of MI stouts is Bell's Expedition/Founders Imperial/Dark Horse Plead the Fifth. Try all three and you're virtually guaranteed to like at least one.

I agree with the above, and if you want variety don't overlook New Holland Night Tripper (I think but don't know for sure but this may be the base for Dragon's Milk) and Greenbush Dystopia.

But if bitter is what you want, then Bell's Expedition is a phenomenal beer. I actually like this and I'm not into overly bitter beers. Also, Arcadia Ales Imperial Stout.....very bitter, too much for me.

i'm going to have to start an opposite version of this thread. Search out all the sweet stouts that I can access. I have a definite sweet tooth for food and for beer.

I have not had any Deschutes in a while - I almost never see it. I did enjoy the Great Lakes porter though.

All of the Tapistry brews I've tried, I've liked, but have not seen any readily available in stores...

    Thanks for the suggestions!

How about we expand the discussion to regional/national (not just MI) bitter/roasty porter/stouts that are readily accessible in MI supermarkets, such as Sierra Nevada Porter and Stout?
