Heading to the UP next week and need to find somewhere for good beer. We're staying in L'Anse, about 30 minutes south of Houghton. I know Keewanaw is there, not sure if there's anything else (brewery or beer bar). Also, looking for a decent shop in Wisconsin near the border to pick up some New Glarus red and tart. Any suggestions would be welcome.
My wife is from L'Anse. I wouldn't hold your breath from anything right around there. Depends on what you are looking for. Pat's foods IGA, big grocery store, had a surprisingly decent selection. Probably no limited releases.
Im pretty sure that there is a BA (don't recall his user name) who runs a resturaunt/bar/hotel up on the kewanaw penninsula somewhere up there. Seems I recall he got some pretty boss stuff up there. Im sure he'll ring in at some point
Brickside Brewery just opened recently in Copper Harbor. No reviews on BA yet but you could be the first!
It's a bit of a drive, but I have a feeling you're going to be closer than most: http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/25815 Over a year since I went...
You also have The Library in Houghton, and it's a pretty decent place for beer and food. Call ahead to Red Jacket in Calumet to see if they have their Expresso Stout on tap, and then it will be worth the trip there just for it.
You're also only one hour away from Marquette, MI where there are now 3 microbreweries, 4 if you count the brewery in Ishpeming which is on the way.
Rempo already linked to the review and I'll second it. Do yourself a favor and make the hour drive up to see Marc (http://beeradvocate.com/community/members/marcatgsb.549754/) at Fitzgerald's (http://www.eagleriverinn.com/index.php?id=7). You won't be disappointed. As mothergoose mentioned, The Library would be a nice stop on your way from L'Anse through Houghton. They seemed to have had Black Note on draft for the last 3 months. I am getting ready for our yearly vacation to the UP, and am pretty excited. Enjoy your trip!
I'm heading to Marquette Thursday evening and am currently planning on stopping by Fitzgerald's Sunday afternoon for lunch and some good beer. Let me know if anyone will be around then as well. I would like to check out a couple of the microbreweries in Marquette as well.
Both Mark and Adam recommended my place already (thanks guys, appreciate it) I still have some KH and Bramble available for in house consumption, as well as Juliet, Lolita, and some Brux. Also just got in the JP/Maui brewing collaboration. I have GI Matilda, Epic Brewing Brainless on Cherries, 2 Hearted, Short's Soft Parade, Sierra Nevada Hoptimum and Oddside Ales Mint Stout on tap...but I'm sure those will change by Sunday. My bottle list is fairly up to date on the website, with a few omissions and additions. Love to have you stop by, or any other BA that is in the area.
Yep you were the guy I was talking about. I remember you mentioning you still had KH but I didn't want to misquote you if I was just drunk and "misremembered" at that point.
SHHHH. Don't mention that beer that is not to be named. A bottle needs to last 2 weeks so that I can have it again! I'm bringing up some stuff to share with you and Mike!
Had a wonderful lunch and Sunday afternoon at the Fitz - highly recommend it for anyone in the area. We drove another 2 hours from Marquette, and it was definitely worth it.
