    Hi Beerslovers,

I want to set up a MicroBrewery in SouthEast Asia and I would like a bit of insight from you guys, Brewmasters and beer lovers.

I would love to hear some stories on how you started your journey, issues you met on your way, advices of any kind..

    • How and where you got your gear from ( second hand and/or new ) ?

What would be for you the ideal setup with a budget of 20K $ (Im talking brewing equipments only).

We would like to buy most of it 2nd hand. Is there any specific items we should rather get new, what is you feeling about 2nd hand stuff when it comes to brewing?

    Cheers !!

I've worked on multiple start-ups and $20K is not going to do it (unless 20K translates much higher in south east Asia).

The main things to look at in used equipment are your heat source (electric, direct flame, internal colandria, steam) and your chiller (I would not buy a used chiller). I'd be careful with a used steam system but that doesn't mean you can't find a deal. If it's direct fire I'd check the base of the kettle depending on the age. As usual you need to check everything out. Find a brewer with experience who knows what they're doing. It will be worth paying someone up front to cover up loses that might come later, and if you can find a brewer/investor you're that much better off.

Location is always key, of course, and then there's the whole business plan. WHAT are you planning to do? if you can create two or even three businesses out of one you're that much better off (i.e. a brewery that operates as a coffee shop in the morning, perhaps a bakery as well, a light lunch stop, and then maybe a light dinner and beer shop for later on - or it could be something as simple as sharing your space or hanging art for sale on the walls.)

So I'm sorry that I can't answer your question without more information but feel free to send me a message if you have questions. Beyond that, I'm not familiar with southeast Asia which limits what I can offer you, and I doubt you'll find many here who are, but I wish you luck. Now is the time to strike so find partners who have money and make it happen.

On $20k, you’re better off keeping that in a savings account.
