Odd Bird Brewing in Stockton, NJ looks set to open soon. They just brewed their first couple batches of beer. One of which is a Bitter that just went into casks. Excited for this place!

I can't say I am all that surprised by this news. I went there about a year ago, and found the beers to be ranging from below average to average. I had not heard from anyone suggesting that there was any improvement since then.

It's a very interesting situation. The owners had opened at least one successful brewery previously, albeit in Spain. Curious whether their approach got lost in translation when applied to the US, or some other reason. Some had said that they were too upscale with their restaurant for an area like Homestead. Could be a combo of a lot of things including, of course, if their beer quality wasn't up to par in a beer city like Pittsburgh.

I ride my bike along the canal quite a bit, it'll be good to have a place to "rehydrate" afterwards.

    Big update!

First, I checked out both Zeus and Black Snake yesterday. Zeus' facility is goddamn beautiful. Got a kind of art deco vibe going on and it very much looks like it belongs in, like, Chicago and not downtown Poughkeepsie. Tried the pils, NEIPA, coffee milk stout and a fruited sour and left extremely impressed with all of them. Between them, Kings Court and Plan Bee that's gonna be a real nice day to spend in Poughkeepsie.

Then I went to Black Snake, like 20 mins north of there. Very rustic cabin/barn vibe as it's on an actual farm. Would be absolutely beautiful to drink outside there in the summer. Had a cream ale and a raspberry saison. Both were solid and drinkable.

    Other things:

    1) Bound by Fate in Schuylerville is open! Looks like three things on tap right now and some guest taps. Soft opening status; they'll be open Fridays and Saturdays until the grand opening in February when it looks like hours will expand.

    2) Roe Jan Brewing in Hillsdale looks preeeetty close to completion. Seems to be a beautiful spot inside, with a big circular wrap-around bar and plenty of other tables. Wouldn't be surprised to see them open by the end of February.

    3) Beginning stages, but Trifocal Brewing is trying to open in Brunswick. They're looking for a zoning variance now to convert the building to a taproom so we're a ways away on this one.

Human Robot Beer (Philadelphia) had their soft opening last Friday and says they will have a full scale opening as of Feb 6th. This is the spot where St. Benjamin's used to be.

Sly Fox Malvern is open as of today. The Sly Fox Den location in Reading was supposed to open over the weekend but was postponed for unstated reasons. Presumably it will be open within a week or so.

Liquid Noise Brewing (Marysville) is having its grand opening this Friday January 24th.

One day a few weeks ago I was at Plan Bee and decided to make a drive up to Suarez. I usually just take 9 all the way up, but my GPS had me take a different route because I was leaving from Plan Bee. I remember driving past some sign on the road that said "Brewery now open". I spent a good amount of time trying to figure out where this was when I got home. I even tried going along street view on google maps to try and find it.

Thanks for posting this. This had to have been what I saw.

100% is. They have a banner right on the road and then the farm is set up on the hill.

Unrelated: Common Roots making serious headway on their rebuild. Would not be shocked to see them open by March. Gonna be a hell of a full taproom when they do.

Crystal Ball Brewing rumored to be closing its doors tomorrow. No official word. If true, that certainly reignites the concern of a shakeout in PA breweries.

On the positive side, Sly Fox confirmed that their second Reading location opens Monday (a small taproom only). Maxie's Brew House opens in Shippensburg on Feb 1st and Rough Edges Brewing (Waynesboro) will have their soft opening that same day. Phantom Power Brewing (Millersville) is shooting for a March opening, as is Starview Brews (Columbia)

Mindful (Greater Pittsburgh) announced an expansion location, and another in the works. Hitchhiker announced a downtown taproom opening summer 2020. Levante Brewing announced that they are reopening The Stables in Chester Springs, as a year round location. Country Club Brewing nailed down a location in Allentown and hopes for a summer opening.

Sorry for the long post about all sorts of scattered opening announcements, but the anxiety from Crystal Ball's supposed closure called for a barrage of positive news. Fingers crossed, but gut feeling is that things will continue getting worse before they get better. 2020 seems set to be a rough ride in PA.

Just got back from a Monday dinner at Zeus. I'll echo that the facility is very beautiful. It's has one of the nicest bars that I've ever seen. That being said, the place kinda has a gentrification vibe considering the location, so take from that what you will.

My wife and I split a few of the small plates, and we enjoyed all it. My wife enjoyed the fruited sour. It was nice and tart with decent body. I really liked the imperial stout. It had a lot of coffee and dark chocolate notes.

Overall, we felt that they want to sell you on the restaurant that brews its own beer concept. It felt a notch or two above a brewpub/gastro pub. I personally prefer a " the salt of the earth" kind of experience ala Schatzi's, but I can see Zeus getting popular especially once they are able to open up the rooftop and patio.

My wife and tried to stop into Zeus on Friday night for a round or two and maybe a small plate as part of a little crawl to some other spots. Lol no. 90 minute wait for a table and bar was three deep.

with a babysitter at home for a few hours and the two of us on a (roughly) 530am-930pm schedule we hit Schatzis and called it good. I’ll go
Back to Zeus on a Sunday afternoon sometime I guess.

On the flip side had a great burger at Schatzis and we had Grimm and HVB cans and draft pours of the new EQ/vitamin sea collab.

Tom, I have never visited the Stables. Can I ask why you would prefer for it to not re-open?

    Cheers!

They actually announced that they're planning to have an exclusive 21+ area to address this problem. Not sure how well it will work, since kids are usually screaming their heads off while running around outside...but maybe it's part of the indoor space? They've at least taken note of the complaints. If Levante has shown anything, it's that they'll take all complaints seriously and try to find a reasonable way to accommodate as many opinions as possible.
