    Good afternoon, Boston!

Looks like I might be heading to my company's office for a day trip next Thursday. The office is right in downtown. I'm not sure exactly what my schedule is, but we're all supposed to be on the 4:15 Acela back to NY from South Station. So that's about 5+ hours of time spent at the office, so I'm not sure if I'll have time for beer in the middle of the day. I'm hoping to get them to put me on a later train back so I can shop for an hour or two.

Obviously I'll want to stop at Trillium, since it's about a 15 minute walk. I also thought I might stop at Federal Wine & Spirits as well as the Boston Wine Exchange. Does anybody have any other thoughts on what I should do? Is my plan sound? Are there other, better places in the immediate vicinity? I am not intending to sit at a bar and drink, since my time will be extremely limited. And I would rather not have to cab anywhere and be at the mercy of snow, traffic, and the horrific state of Boston traffic lights.

    Cheers!

If you're going to Trillium (which is an excellent idea), skip Federal Wine (unless you're going there for scotch) and BWX. Instead, go to Fort Point Market, which is literally next door to Trillium. If you like european stuff and sours, stop at Bee's Knees on the walk back from Trillium.

Yes, that would definitely be more convenient. What's the selection like at those places? I would want to find a place with a wide variety of what Boston has to offer: JA, Backlash, Night Shift, Wormtown...

In my opinion, Fort Point Market is as good, if not better, than BWX. Federal Wine has some interesting stuff in its cellar (like DFH World Wide Stout from ~2006), but has by far the smallest selection from your list. Take a look at their twitter feed to get a sense of what sorts of things Fort Point Market stocks. They will have Jack's Abby, Backlash, Night Shift, and they do get Wormtown stuff in, but it's been a while since the brewery sent cans to Boston.

Ha! At least we are all keeping our sense of humor about it...

To add to my earlier comments, I don't mean to suggest that BWX and Federal aren't good spots; they are. But if you are around South Station they are not worth backtracking after going to Trillium; I'd spend the ~20+ minutes you'll save enjoying an awesome beer at Row 34 (also next to Trillium). If, however, your office is very close to BWX in the financial district (my office is less than a 5 minute walk away), I'd pop in there as well to check it out.

Acela tickets should be easy to change, make up some excuse to your travel people about why you need to stay to see your Aunt or something. then go to Trillium and eat at Row 34.

That's exactly what I plan to do. Hey, if I offer to take Amtrak it will even save them money!

Thanks, I'll be sure to check that out.

I would love to, but that would take me 30 minutes in each direction on the T according to Google Maps, and I just won't have that kind of time.

If I have time, I will, but my primary objective is to bring bottles home to enjoy. The office is by Summer Street and Devonshire, which Google Maps says is a 4 minute walk from BWX and 7 minutes from Federal.

Does anyone think there would be an appreciable difference in selection between Fort Point/Bees Knees and Federal/BWX? Obviously if I have the time and I'm not over-burdened with bottles after I'm through on the Trillium side of the channel (is that what you guys call it?), then I can hit all the spots, but I'm just trying to prioritize in case time becomes an issue.

If your office is on the corner of Summer & Devonshire, you are very close to BWX, probably a ~3 minute walk at the most. Definitely worth checking out. For what it's worth, here is what I would do (assuming this is all one trip):

Skip Federal and start at BWX. If you see any stuff from Night Shift, Wormtown or Backlash that catches your eye, but it there. There will be plenty Jack's Abby at Fort Point Market (you can always call ahead to confirm), so don't weigh yourself down with that before the walk. Go to Trillium next and buy as many bottles as you are comfortable carrying/purchasing. You will not be let down. Finally pop in Fort Point Market to see if there is anything there that BWX didn't have. For local stuff, you can skip Bee's Knees. I only mentioned it as their Belgium selection (particularly sours) is quite good.

Thanks, that sounds great. I do love belgians/sours, but unless they have Cantillon or rarer 3Fs, I doubt their belgian/sour selection is better than what I can get here.

They have 3F Oude Gueze, Intense Red, and the like. But probably not worth the trip if you have access to good stuff already.

You literally will walk 25 yards from Bees Knees. My advice - swing into Flour (next door) and pick up some chocolate chip cookies to fuel your walk.

Bring me some Bell's Two Hearted and Carton, hehehe. I work like five minutes away

Two Hearted I can definitely do. I'd be happy to bring a six-pack if you pay me for it. Carton is more difficult, however. The cans are only available in certain stores in Jersey; it's only on tap here in the city. I'd be happy to fill a growler for you if you like.

Trillium, Row 34, and Fort Point Market. All on same street no wasted time.
