Mighty Things DIPA by Victory

drinking one now, and it reminds me a lot of what I remember Hop Ranch tasting like. Very good, will definitely pick up another sixer. This is wild speculation, but I wonder if with the merger with Southern Tier and maybe a wider distribution area, there was a conflict with the Hop Ranch name?

 

It would be interesting to hear from the Victory folks who participated in this thread with an answer to this.

Drinking this now and loving it. The azacca compliments the citra and mosaic perfectly imo. Beautiful aroma w/ a dry crisp citrusy finish. Right in my wheelhouse, well done Victory!

Keith, I feel your angst concerning Victory's pattern of "letting the small, but important things" (like routine and accurate updates of draft beer lists on their website) fall through the cracks in the floor! A classic, but timely example was last nite at the D'town brewpub, when I ordered my Hip Czech pils. The lovely lady serving the beer tells me I know how much you like your pilsners, we just tapped a dry-hopped version of the Braumeister pilsner! I said really, I don't see on the current tap list display. Then I asked her what hop was used to dry hop it; was it the same varietal hop used to brew it? She said she didn't know either....very sad response! It was tasty with a nice hop bite to it and exceedingly dry finish. I will find out the hop that was used. My bet it was one of the experimental German hops.

But this has been Victory's modus operandi prior to and since their acquisition; the poor dissemination of important, basic beer-related information is either slow or non-existent without need to ask routine questions or make inquiries to brewing staff or management. It's frustrating at times and really, I believe, affects their overall credibility at times.

 

Sounds like a very tasty double IPA! Have to look for that one out our way! Thanks for posting this heads up on what looks like another hit for Victory.

 

My guess is that the market demands new products to retain interest and tap handles. It also allows the brewery to experiment with different hopping techniques and rates/mixes. We all want new treats all the time, witness the long noted difficulty with flagship sales. So it goes.

 

I disagree too. Sour Monkey is doing very well. Homegrown is unique. Now Mighty Things seems to have some interest and Java Cask has done well. Meanwhile I drink the same amount of Braumeister, Helles and Prima as ever and these are as good as ever. YMMV.

As for pricing, there are constant demands on increases of raw material costs that all breweries deal with. Most brewers do not price in a vacuum, we compare closely to the competition. I know draft keg costs at Victory are very reasonable, when I compare with retail cost of kegs at Total Wine in Maryland it blows my mind you can get a 1/2 BBl of Braumeister or Prima for about $130.

This diagram would suggest that for distributed beer ingredient costs are not a cost driver.

One of my local breweries has had an IPA called 'Dare Mighty Things' out for a while now, it's one of the most popular new beers in our area. That ad from Victory raised a few eyebrows around here. Wonder how long until someone gets sued over this. Pretty sure we get Victory beers here, though I've never had any personally.

Can't be that widely distributed, it only has 24 ratings in 6 months.

 

I'm in the middle of one myself, and am really digging it. It's got a similar tropical/dank/orange peel flavor as the Hop Ranch, but the feel is different, drier and kind of satiny. Great job, especially at the price. I will be getting more, no doubt.

 

Where can you find bottles? Regular places?

 

I don't think it's hit my regular NJ spots yet. NY has it, though, that's where I happened to stumble upon the ones I picked up today. The store is more of a craft beer specialist, although I couldn't say if that matters at this point. I'm kinda hoping it will be readily available if it's the 'new' Hop Ranch.

 

Wegman's KOP had two cases left on the floor and it was selling quickly, $11.49 for the sixer, not a bad price. I have always preferred Hop Ranch to Dirt Wolf and this beer sounds pretty good. I passed for now but I'll try it sometime I'm sure.

 

Had this over the weekend and I really, really like it. Highly recommended.

 

What that shows is over half the money is earned after it ships from the brewery dock.

Hence there are big cost pressures on everything inside the brewery, and one of the variables is ingredients and energy costs. Then insurance and raises (the demand for brewers is intense, and poaching is bad these days...). Cheers.

 

Had this on-tap recently, wasn't blown away. I'll be curious to have it from a bottle.
