The Keeping up with Mikkeller thread (from @ncusatis) got me thinking about his overall availability to the American consumer. I know that he is distributed by the Shelton Bros. here in MD, but I'm not sure if that is his exclusive American distributor. I feel quite lucky in regards to my Mikkeller availability, but that is pretty much down to 3 places: State Line, Max's and Perfect Pour. Those are the only places that I know of that have any kind of Mikkeller selection. There are a few other places that get a new release every now and then (Beer Geek) or have some old, faded ones. I've noticed that his availability seems to have gone down around here. All the Mikkeller out there is always the same, outside of Max's, but he is even more expensive there. State Line has the best selection of his stuff, but I don't get up there too often. His brother and him both have multiple shelves there, but State Line is one of the best stores in the country. His brother is searchable on Seekabrew, but he is not. I'm guessing that is because ET has his main headquarters in Brooklyn now. However, isn't he still primarily a gypsy brewer? I know he consistently brews with Westbrook and more American breweries, than his brother Mikkeller. Evil Twin product availability and visibility is much higher and on the rise, compared to Mikkeller it seems. So, now that Mikkeller is setting down more permanent roots here, first with the San Francisco bar, and more recently with the upcoming Mikkeller Brewing - San Diego. I'm guessing that gives Seekabrew a reason to track his distribution now. Is Mikkeller distributed in your state? Do you know a place that has Mikkeller beers? Do you see Mikkeller often or is he more of a rarity? When you do see his stuff, is it just a bottle or two, or a whole selection? Has his availability changed around you? tl;dr Mikkeller, distribution, Shelton Brothers, Evil Twin, Seekabrew, State Line
Evil Twin is distributed by 12 Percent Imports which came to MI around 2 years ago. We lost the Shelton Brothers connection to a local distributor 4 years ago but got a new one last fall. That being said, currently Evil Twin is much more available, but Mikkeller has been increasing steadily. I can see Mikkeller reaching the same level of volume eventually, but it will take some time. Our Shelton imports are still pretty limited comparatively.
I've heard that it's really hard to get anything from them. Most places around here place an order every now and then, just to wait weeks to months, to suddenly get a random assortment of what they wanted/what was "available". I wonder what distribution changes the Mikkeller Brewing - San Diego will bring. I doubt it will change prices for us, but will just act as a means to increase his footprint and maybe his availability in the states.
Evil Twin just started showing up in Houston in the past 5 or 6 months. Mikkeller has been here for a while. I am more likely to grab a Mikkeller than an Evil Twin. I say that because I have yet to see any of the Evil Twin bombers, we just have the mass produced stuff hanging around Houston. On a trip to Tulsa OK, I was overwhelmed by the amount of Evil Twin beer that existed in bombers. Just don't see that around here
The couple bottle shops I frequent both have so many beers by mikkeller I haven't even began to do my pre purchase research on one of them because I wouldn't even know where to start
It gets mostly 50/50 in my neck of the woods but I tend to see more Evil Twin stuff I would say no surprise there.
Probably evil twin here since it all come from Westbrook..but honestly it's pretty even both have about the same shelf space at my local place.
Pretty even. I see them at every store I shop (mostly VT and NY). Have many options of their brews. I don't buy them though. On tap I have seen Molotov Cocktail, Molotov Lite, Bikini Beer recently. Never seen a Mikk on tap in my area.
Anyone here ordered from his website? I really want a copy of his book, just to see all those beers in one spot.
I believe Mikkeller is with Shelton Bros in MA, and like Evil Twin, is very expensive. Evil Twin seems slightly more common around here though, as they're with a more traditional distributor.
We get a ton a Mikkeller here, as someone above stated I don't even know where to start but I do give it my best shot. My wife's family is in Thailand so I head out to Mikkeller Thailand once a year, will be there in a little over two weeks actually but man is it expensive. Had a $1200 Baht ($32) George vs Brian Cherry 12oz last year...hey, we were on vacation.
