How does a brewer with mediocre beers and mediocre ratings consistently charge overrated prices? Is it because he charges a lot for a beer? does a high price quantify a beer as high quality?

Good question. I have never bought a Mikkeller beer.

I have never had a WOW beer from Mikkeller. I don't understand the mystique.

I'm consistently baffled that people will shell out money for Mikkeller.

The names and labels are pretty catchy. I always look twice at a label of theirs. Also, the single hop series was actually really good. I enjoyed Citra quite a bit.

Lowest common D = Shelton bros
all the beers distributed by them seems high -

Having said that I've purchased some amazing mikkeller beers - enough to say that they're an awesome brewery

Beer Geek Brunch Weasel. Really phenomenal stuff. But yeah. I do tend to agree with you.

But for the price? I bought some better half thinking "ohh its Mikkeller" must be good. Wish I spent the money on something else. Yet to be impressed for the prices I see.

Anything they do with coffee is usually very good. I really liked the sauvin brut fresh. Beyond that I haven't been too impressed. Their prices are so high that I tend to pass them by unless a new release is getting good buzz.

I will from time to time spend $6.99 on a beer geek breakfast, one of the best beers I have ever had. It's hard to justify getting it when breakfast stout is $9.99 usually.

I have an affinity for Mikkeller but that is probably because I love the unusual stuff. I mean I got into beer thanks to DFH and everyone already knows all about them. Now that I look at the few ratings that I have for him, that most of them are in the negative/red. I would say that his biggest problem is pricing especially when it comes to anything that is not high ABV, a style that lends to cellaring or sours. There are a few stores around me that still have most of the hop series and yest series, but I would never buy them because they are a shadow of their former self. Also, he doesn't date any of his beers to my knowledge. I really do like his sours for their uniqueness and his stouts for their flavor. Probably the most accessible brewery to get stuff aged in weird/not bourbon barrels.

1000 IBU fresh is awesome though.

I have only ever bought one Mikkeller beer. It was so expensive, and so bad, that I have never been inclined to buy another.

Throw weird shit in beer & it sells. Doesn't matter what it tastes like... BA's are a gullible bunch.

I've had a handful of mikkeller beers I've enjoyed. The yeast series was fun albeit expensive. While the beers weren't amazing it was cool to drink them side by side and not the differences. Beer Geek Brunch is fantastic and actually worth it. I also very much enjoyed the Drink'in the sun beers. Very low alcohol so not much of a draw to most here, but I thought they packed in a good deal of taste. The big worse sereis are enjoyable as well. Most of the time they are not worth the price tag to me, but there are some gems in there.

I have mostly found them to be meh. But Cognac George was nothing short of awesome and I did really like Beer Rauch Breakfast. Beer Geek Breakfast and Brunch Weasel are also pretty solid but not super special in my eyes.

I would love to try BA Vanilla Shake but it is like $37+shipping for a 12 oz. Thaf*ck is up with that?

I usually can't bring myself to spend the money, but almost everything (with the exclusion of some of the beers in those experimental series's) I've had from Mikkeller has been very good; cognac barrel George, Sauvin Brut, Brunch Weasel, Texas Ranger, Milk Stout, Spontanframboos, 1000 IBU's, Invasion Farmhouse IPA, that German-hopped IPA whatever it was called, the Coffee DIPA, that 17 hop IPA, the Christmas beers he does, I'm sure I'm forgetting some. If you count the collaborations he's done I've liked all those I've tried too (the Cigar City tripel was great).

That said, I pass on a lot of his stuff if it doesn't sound that interesting to me for the price (just passed on the porter and imperial pilsner for instance, which I would have tried if they were cheaper). He also does some weird shit just for the hell of it that I've tried on draft or in samples before that I would not have been happy to pay bottle prices for (lookin at you Mexas Ranger, and that 100% attenuation beer). Ries a la M'ale wasn't great. And I didn't like the It's Alive! beers.

And like I mentioned before, some of the ones in the experimental lineups were weird (the single hop series, the yeast series, the black hole barrel series), but those were experiments meant to let you taste the effects of single ingredients on the same recipe.

I guess my summary is that nearly every Mikkeller beer that I judged before buying to probably be worth the price definitely was, and when he nails it he nails it.

I forget the exact price, but I shelled out a good chunk of change for Beer Hop Breakfast and, honestly, I'd do it again. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I wouldn't do it OFTEN, but it was good enough for me to feel comfortable paying for it again every once in awhile.
