Going to be in Milwaukee for two nights in July, and looking for suggestions. I've looked at other threads, but since I don't know anything about the city, they don't mean much to me when people talk about different neighbohoods. We'll be going to baseball games both nights, so would like to stay in an area where we can check things out and get good beers earlier in the day. Looking for decent/reasonable hotel suggestions also.

    Thanks.

Von Trier on Farwell is one of my "can't miss" places and by July Pizza Man should be reopened up the street.

There's not much doing out by Miller Park so maybe a bar with a ball game shuttle if you don't want to drive. Check OnMilwaukee's website for a list.

There's a few Belgian (Cafe Hollander or Benelux) some craft spots (Sugar Maple, Romans, Palm, Comet Cafe for breakfast) brewpubs (Ale House, Hinterland). Out towards Miller Park, Discount Liquor is pretty amazing.

Iron Horse is an excellent boutique hotel with a cool patio & its across the street from a distillery. i hear

Second the Lowlands Group (Cafe Benelux, Centraal, and Hollander). We bounced back and forth between Centraal and the Sugar Maple and had a great time. Not very close to Miller but really not that far either......

+1 to Sugar Maple, Palm, and Roman's for the classics.
Landmark and Burnhearts are cool too. Bayview is where it's at...
County Clare is a good place to stay, and Allium is just up the street on N. Prospect.

Coming from a Bay View resident, not that difficult either--take 1st/kk to national, national to 6th, 6th to canal, and head through the valley to the "back exit" to Miller Park, thereby avoiding the nightmare that is I94 under construction :grinning:

Saw someone else recommended Iron Horse....might be a perfect place to stay. It puts you smack dab in the middle of-

    a) Miller Park (check out Benno's in West Allis for a gem of a hidden beer bar and Fourth Base on National Ave right by the park for amazing food, but REAL pricey!!!)

    b) Milwaukee's East side (Hotel Foster, Stubby's, World of Beer)

    and

    c) Bayview (Sugar Maple, Burnhearts, The Palm).

Probably a $15 cab ride in each direction, can't go wrong!!!

I meant to say, before i cut myself off, that the old Pabst brewery has apparently opened a small hotel that looks "beer-geek cool" on its website.

If you have time, Miller, Sprecher & Lakefront run really good big, medium & small (respectively) brewery tours.

You didnt ask, but Karl Ratszch's is better traditional german food than Mader's (IMHO).

^^^ I suggest Kegel's over Ratszch's or Mader's (better value, good food, and old school Milwaukee German tavern atmosphere), and close to Miller Park. Spaten on multiple drafts as well.

Thanks for all the tips. Unfortunately, couldn't get in to either Iron Horse or County Clare on the nights we need. Any other suggestions for hotels?

Just do a Priceline name your own price for Downtown Milwaukee (zone 4 on Priceline) for a 3 or 3.5 star hotel. Honestly, I've stayed at a good percentage of those hotels, and they're all nice enough and all have easy access to the freeway. Avoid naming your own price for 4-star, you could end up at the Ambassador which isn't in the greatest area.

Also, just an FYI, Northwestern Mutual has their annual meeting July 20th-24th, if you're coming in those nights you're basically SOL on finding a decent hotel downtown.

I recommended Comfort Suites Milwaukee Airport. Stayed overnight due to early am flight. Overall this was great. Beds were comfortable and rooms were clean. Nice that their was a fridge in my room. Staff was very accommodating and it was great to have the bar for everyone I really appreciate the 24 hour shuttle to the airport and back as well as the free parking at the hotel. I will stay here again.

Your BA name is Diane21 but you're a male, you just signed up today, didn't take time to update your profile, picture, etc. and within minutes had a nice post explaining the airport hotel including pictures and a link to the website?

How long have you worked at the Comfort Suites?

this is really spot on advice. the ambassador screwed up everything with the 4 stars.

speaking of the ambassador, i used to live kitty corner behind it when I went to Marquette. Mercifully they knocked the apartment building down. That area was a dump in the mid 80's.

Not that long ago I used to stay downtown at the Hyatt for 38 bucks a night on Priceline.

Got stuck with the Ambassador a couple months ago because of a Hotwire purchase...the hotel itself isn't too bad, but I wouldn't recommend walking anywhere because of the neighborhood (there's not much within walking distance anyway). So if you don't mind using their shuttle service or calling a cab, it's not a bad place if it's that or the outskirts. But the 3-3.5 star spots are probably optimal.

There are a bunch of motels and hotels by the airport, you can walk to Landmark 1850 from many of them,Landmark usually have over 20 big name craft beer on tap, plus an excellent fish fry, your also just a short drive from Erv's Mug and Romans Pub,Burnhearts at that location. Plus your right by the expressway which will take you right to Miller Park

I would have to disagree with this....staying by the airport will create a lot of headaches, trust me...my office is located in Oak Creek (about 3 or 4 minutes south of the airport) and I dread the drive, especially with the freeway construction going on.

OP, stick to the downtown area. The drive/ cab rides will be way more hassle free.

And pro tip....when going to a Brewers game, try to go to a bar with a shuttle to Miller Park (unless you are tailgating). That's the best way to travel! Once you get your hotel room set up, send me a BM. I will point you in the right direction!

I cannot agree more with this, construction or not, no matter where you are, unless you like sitting in traffic, do NOT take the freeway to Miller Park on game day.

I visit Milwaukee at least 4 times per year, and From an outsiders perspective there are a couple of can't miss places. First you have to go to discount. It's my first stop every time I come. As for bars, stubby's pub and grub and sugar maple are top notch. There was another little dive bar over in west allis that has a ton of craft beer on tap, but I cant remember the name of it. As for the three tours listed above lakefront was my favorite and definitely worth attending.
