Heading there this Saturday and wondering what pub to hit up. Looking for something near the lake if possible and something that has some really cool stouts and more rare stuff. Any suggestions?
In my opinion there are three must hit bars in Milwaukee, all on KK. Sugar Maple and Palm Tavern are run by the same people. Sugar Maple is big and focused on American Craft with a lot of great Wisconsin finds. Palm is small, dark, cozy and focused on Belgians and other Euro imports, along with some good whiskey. My favorite for sheer character is Roman's. This guy is great, as is the tap list. Check the hours at Roman's though, they're screwy. It's magic.
Can't speak too much on the bars, but joe is correct, get some Black Husky Pale Ale. If you like it enough, on your way back to Illinois stop at Tenuta's in Kenosha, they have the Pale Ale in bottles, fantastic stuff for the price point ($5.99 if I remember correctly).
Landmark 1850,Erv's Mug also great beer menu and good food besides and of course the ones listed above. The Cruise in Waterford for all the best of Central Waters
Benno's in West Allis typically has an awesome tap list. I was there earlier in the week and had FFF Permanent Funeral, FFF Dreadnaught, Big Bad Baptist, and Speedway Stout on tap. They have something around 20-25 taps of high quality micros.
Went to sugar maple and the bar tender was very nice and friendly people overall. Will have to try the other bars next time. Thanks for the suggestions!!!
