Is it just me or would u guys like to see craft come I the little 5lt mini kegs like heinekin? I myself am not a fan of growlers for the simple facr by the time I go back for a seco d glass my beer is flay. I think mini kegs of craft would be awesome
I've seen Oberon, but that's about the most "crafty" mini-keg I can remember. Definitely something I'd be interested in though.
Bells definitely offers Two Hearted, Best Brown, and Oberon. I heard rumblings of Hopslam mini kegs but never saw one first hand. Church Brewworks in Pittsburgh also puts out the 5L kegs. On a side note, some homebrewers have begun using 5L kegs in their kegerators/keezers.
I think mini kegs would be pretty good too. In the meantime, I have a 64 oz growler that I got from my home brew supplier that has a cap that allows me to top it up with CO2. It solves the flatness issues as I have kept an open growler well carbonated for over a week using it.
I have had mini-kegs of Rogue Yellow Snow, Hofbräu Oktoberfest, Bell's Best Brown Ale and Bell's Oberon. All were excellent for a night with a few friends. I'd definitely buy more of them if they were available.
I've had Bell's Two Hearted and Midwest Pale Ale, Hofbrau Oktoberfest and regular, other than that, I don't know of many others. A better variety would be great!
5L is too much of one beer for me. I enjoy lots of variety and even though I have go-to beers, it may take me a month to finish a 12 pack since I like to switch around.
You are either getting your growlers at the wrong type of place [straight from the tap fill ups, without a hose] or not handling them correctly. It matters, believe me. I get my growlers filled at a place that uses counter pressure and not only do they last 3-4 weeks unopened, the carbonation lasts until the last drop after they're opened. And if you are not using 32 oz. growlers, find a place that does.
I bought a keg of Bells Best Brown on discount for $9 (it was old). It was an incredibly good decision, and the beer was still more than delicious. Doing a kegstand on a mini-keg is a great comedic opportunity as well. I've also seen Hopslam, Two-Hearted, and Oberon, but never anything from any other brewery (besides Heineken).
I got a HopSlam a few years ago for $33. It was all he had left and I was not going to leave empty handed!
I work at a mom n pop in florida, and I've ordered mini kegs of various craft beer for customers. They come in 2 packs, and generally cost 20 to 35 per 5L Keg. If you see craft beer in a mom n pop, they're usually pretty happy to try ordering it for you if you get both at once.
