In addition to Rochester's Kinney Creek, both Jack Pine* and Red Wing Brewery announced that they are open for business this week. HammerHeart ought to be the next to open, any week now . . .

    "More to Come"

*Licensed to brew, technically, and might just be open for taproom sales before the New Year hits.

Going to the RW brewery tonight - I'll post back with how their brews are!

Great to see a couple more places opening up outside the Twin Cities!

Back from the Red Wing Brewery opening night...

    House Taps:
    Remmler's Holiday Special
    Jordan Creek IPA
    Work Boot Red
    Barn Bluff Brown
    Pepie's Porter
    Stoneware Stout
    Good Old Zimmie's Root Beer

    Guest Taps:
    Alaskan Amber
    Alaskan Winter Ale
    Stone Arrogant Bastard
    Summit Extra Pale Ale

I had the red, brown, porter, stout, and root beer, along with some chocolate cake and a pulled pork sandwich. Great sandwich and cake. The root beer was probably my favorite - fantastic. Friends I was with tried the holiday special and IPA so we had a full tasting, combined between us.

The overall consensus is that the brews are very safe, average recipes. Nothing really stands out from one brew to the next - all very basic and sessionable. Out of the four brews I had, the brown was my least favorite. It wasn't bad, just boring - forgettable. Not much of a nose, and very little in the flavor department. Watery. The red was my favorite. Great lacing, nice head and aroma, good hoppy bite. The porter and stout, while being 6.5 and 4.5%ish abv, respectively, both revealed their alcohol in the finish, and I don't care for that. Neither brew was very roasty. I could drink the stout all night with no complaints, but the porter just didn't appeal to me, despite being a big fan of porters in general. Quite sweet. I didn't try the IPA personally, but my friends' opinions were that it was more of a pale ale, not so much an india pale ale. Hop forward, but lacking the spice or bitter finish of an IPA.

That being said, damn that was some good root beer

What did you think? I stopped down in the early afternoon and had the IPA and the Stout. Both were pretty good for fresh local options. I got a sample of their holiday beer and wasn't really a fan. Which ones did you have?

Holy smokes, that's a lot to start out with! Seeing as how there were already a few other beery-options in that town (Bierstube, Marie's, and Kelly's Bar), Red Wing will make for an even better day trip.

    Thanks for the heads-up!

I second this, then come down and see me afterwards. BCBS on tap right now, if you need motivation...

Red Wing, Nosh and Read's Landing. Sounds like a nice day trip down the Mississippi.

BCBS on tap, you say? I sure hope you have a few comfy couches to spare for naps afterward! :grinning:

I have been meaning to get down to NOSH for quite a while now, and sometime in the New Year looks likeliest. I'll drop y'all a line when I do!

You'd better make that an overnight, my friend! :sunglasses: Red Wing's got both bowling and beer!

Canal Park Brewery should be up now or soonish. I'll be up in Duluth on Friday and check things out. I'd offer to make some Fitgers runs for y'all but I have to head to VA for a week on that Sunday; If there are any whales in VA I should look out for let me know, maybe we could work something out.

I believe that they're officially open now? This December 3rd Facebook post indicates they are. I think they've been open ever since their "Secret" opening -- but let us know for sure!

Likewise, it looks like Jack Pine has beer ready to go, as soon as the local officials are duly satisfied; it can be a real back-and-forth with City officials (the issue, I believe is the total available number of Parking spots? :grimacing:)

I would like to visit Jack Pine when they are up and running. It'll be the first operational brewery in the area in about a hundred years...

    Where is Hammerheart?

Anyone heard of anything in the I-35 corridor south of the Cities? Albert Lea, Owatonna, Lakeville, anywhere? Pretty soon we will have a nice chain of breweries about ever 30 min coming north out of Des Moines, it would be great to keep that going all the way up to the cities.

I was planning on stopping by Wednesday night, anyway. Now I have that much more reason to do so!

Seriously, if any of you who are reading this have not been to Nosh and you are ever within 100 miles of Lake City, you should stop by!

I would think Faribault would be a good place for a brewery.
