I was reading the FT posts yesterday and saw a guy looking for an infected BA IRS from Stone. He wanted it for an "infected tasting" he was having. He went on to list the beers he already had for the tasting and one of the beers he listed was Mirror Mirror '09.

Is this really infected? I have had been holding on to a bottle of this for fucking ever. I know that The Abyss from '09 has been widely reported as being infected but this is the first I've heard of the Mirror Mirror. Please shed some light on this for me guys.

    Cheers!!

I reviewed an '09 bottle back in December, my notes don't indicate any kind of infection. Maybe he was thinking of '09 Abyss? Then again, I did just find this.

Yes, it is infected, but it took close to two years before people noticed. I had mine with a year on it, and never noticed. Now, at three years, there is a good chance you can tell.

Depends on who you ask. The one I had awhile back was great. Even better than expected. I only have one left so I wont open it until the new batch comes out. It seems to me this infection is very inconsistant.

It is, but fewer of them than with Abyss. I know of more people with uninfected Mirror Mirror than Abyss. I've also heard it's a tasty infection, so you might be good either way.

I've had 6 bottles of this and only the first bottle, which was consumed within the first 2 months of bottling, wasn't infected.

I had an '09 Mirror Mirror at a tasting a couple of months ago. Definitely infected but like the '09 Abyss, it is not a drainpour. It had a definite twang that was not intended but it doesn't overpower the base beer.

I'm glad you had better luck than I. All but one were total drainpours.

I've had several bottles of Mirror Mirror 2009 and have thoroughly enjoyed every one of them.

Had one a few months ago for a blind barleywine tasting and it was def. Infected. Thought someone jokingly put a sour beer into the mix. It smelled fine for being infected, but I took one sip and couldn't drink anymore.

i've had 2 bottles from 2 separate traders, and neither were infected. it's a dice roll.

i'm pretty sure that 1) they don't blend all the barrels together, and 2) only some barrels were infected.

    (1) is something i assumed to begin with, but other people don't find blending as unlikely as i do. however, the presence of infection in only some bottles seems to at least corroborate this assumption (if (2) is true).

anyway, hopefully yours isn't infected. also, i think you were right to hold onto it... i really don't think the hop varietal they chose for that beer did it any favors. tasted a lot better aged, but still wasn't really a top barleywine for me (edit: totally subjective though; i could tell it was very high quality, ie had tons of depth in the flavor, but it just wasn't floating my boat as one might say, or maybe one might used to have said).

Have had it twice, had my only bottle more than an year ago right when Deschutes acknowledged infection. My bottle was luckily great.

One was busted open last winter at a tasting... smelled like a Flanders style beer, one sip determined its destiny in the drain :-/

I had an infected bottle back in 2010 I think but my brewing partner opened the last bottle he had a few weeks back and it was fucking amazing. It wasn't infected at all. Luck of the draw I guess.

I had Mirror Mirror back in 2010 and it tasted pretty amazing! BTW, I hope that infected tasting is sponsored by pepto-Bismol!

I've only had it once, I enjoyed it. I'm not sure if it was off or that's how it's supposed to be, but it was in that weird state where it might have been infected but it sort of worked with the beer.

Yes it is infected, but I still thoroughly enjoyed my bottle.
