Anyone who thought Newcastle was bitter or heavy has obviously never tried it. So, this ad must be targeted at AAL drinkers who are ever so slightly curious about something that isn't pale yellow and super fizzy?

their clear bottles always confused me. why do they put pretty much all their other beers in brown bottles, yet put the flagship in clear. makes no sense to me.

    Good beer doesn't need advertising.

I'm guessing that's exactly what they're going for. People who don't drink beer, or people who don't drink non-yellow beer. I know I've heard my (non-beer-drinking) mom say things along the lines of "isn't that really strong?" and "that's bitter, right?" when I mention darker beers (I think the "really strong" comment specifically came when I mentioned having a Guinness at one of the local restaurants... even though Guinness Draught is barely over 4% ABV so definitely not strong in the alcohol sense! XD)

There definitely does seem to be an association between "dark" beers and heavy/strong/bitter among the general population of people who either don't drink beer or only drink Bud/Miller/Coors/etc. and their "lite" versions.

Definitely had a Newcastle kick in the late 80's, early 90's as one of my friends claimed it was John Entwistle's favorite beer...which made it A OK in my book.

. . . meh. To the commercial - why are they swearing?

It's certainly not fabulous, but it's better than Yuengling, way better than BMC, and definitely enjoyable (provided it's not skunked), especially when when there's nothing better around. I think some of their new varieties like werewolf and and the Newcastle blonde are decent as well.

Because some people think swearing, especially when unexpected, is funny. It's juvenile, but I'd be lying if I said I was above that kind of humor.

I wouldn't say it's attacking craft beer drinkers.

More aimed at lager drinkers that don't try any dark beer because they think it's "heavy".

I never really liked Newcastle but any commercial that gets people to try non yellow fizzy beer is definitely good for craft beer.

So they have shown they can make a decent advertisement. Now if they could only figure out not to put their beer in clear bottles so that every 3rd of 4th one won't be skunky.

Yeah, the extended commercial actually does a better job getting the point across. The 30 second one is a pretty weak ad campaign.

I'm an idiot who thought a beer called Newcastle Brown would be brewed in Newcastle*.
