And as you know , once it was.
For the benefit of other BAs the story refects a cynical approach.Newcastle Brown was granted Protected Geographical Indication and was restricted to being brewed in the city of Newcastle upon Tyne in England. However, having obtained this protection for their product, the brewery decided in 2004 that it would move across the river Tyne to Gateshead. As Gateshead is technically a separate town—albeit only the width of a river apart—it does not fall within the required geographical restriction. The brewery then applied to the European Union authorities to have the geographical restriction revoked. If the restriction had not been revoked, the brewery would have been forced either to move back to Newcastle, or stop calling its beer "Newcastle" brown ale.[9] Ultimately, the brewery's application to revoke the geographic restriction was approved

I love that they used ass clown too. that tickled my fancy.

I love the commercial, and found it entertaining.

As far as the clear bottles are concerned, I'll guess that like some other breweries, they are probably using specially isomerized hops, which are less prone to degradation in finished beer that's packaged in clear glass.

I do agree though that using clear or green glass is a pretty silly practice. Even if the isomerized hops are less prone to light struck skunkiness (and the liklihood that the protection factor is surely less than 100%) why would companies take the risk at all?

All in all though, I don't think Newkie Brown is a terrible beer at all. Of course it is more subdued compared to American "craft" beers (which are often overdone messes anyway, especially lately) but I wouldn't characterize it as bland the way many beer nerds love to do.

Of course, that's just my take on it. Individual perceptions will always vary (that's what makes the world go 'round).

I liked it. Funny thing is I don't have a TV, so I saw it online while streaming a popular network show. It wasn't censored. Another reason to can the TV and just go broadband only.

Funny ad, thanks for sharing. I sometimes have a fresh Newcastle with pancakes in the morning.

Newcastle consistently puts out fantastic commercials. The beer....ehhh, perhaps not so much. But the commercials rock.

I've only been a "craft drinker" for maybe 1.5 yrs. No commercial, of any country, will get me to go back to "regular" beer. EVER! Oh, and I"ve had Newcastle, and it wasn't a drain pour.

At least fully envelope a 6er in the packaging. I feel you on that.

It was one of the first beers that I actually truly enjoyed. I can say for certain that it definitely did put me on the road toward better beer.

I gotta admit, I really liked Newcastle Brown about 25 years ago. The last time I had it I did not care for it. I figured my palate had changed or the beer had changed. Turns out both are correct.

I think they're idiots for putting this beer into clear glass bottles but at the end of the day, NBA is not a bad beer. I kind of like it. But I will only drink it on-tap.

Bad advertising though. Never use the word "idiot" in your ad.

Since I've found craft, I feel the same way, I don't mind one on draft or bottle but probably once a year now if Im somewhere that doesn't have a great selection.

Being offended by this, as a beer nerd, seems kind of tremendously silly (especially since BA's on this site are the same people decrying how "everyone is always offended" in that forum post about the "Craft Beer is Sexist" article).

It's a light-hearted, humorous ad. And it's not even really picking on beer nerds; it's picking on *super*-uninformed light beer drinkers, if it's picking on anyone. If Newcastle can be a gateway for those people, then sure, whatever.

Honestly I dont have a problem with it. Its clearly in jest and is actually kind of funny. Does it make me want NBA-not really. But they clearly dont take themselves too seriously so the ad should be taken in jest and not in a serious manner. A

It's an attention grabbing advertisement. You gotta give 'em credit for that.

From watching it, I would not say that they are confronting people who think the beer is sub-par. They are just making fun of people who judge the beer without ever having tried it (or perhaps off of a quick sip), which is not exactly an entirely bad message. Unless you are the sort of person who cannot take a ribbing, I suppose.

Also, the part at the end where the creators call themselves 'dumb fuckers' would seem to imply that it's all tongue-in-cheek. It has brought the brand attention, so by that metric it's a pretty successful advertisement.

Newcastle isn't that bad, but clear bottles will still be stupid forever.

Yeah, I actually think the ad is funny. Newcastle is not bad stuff. There are just better options.

I thought that ad was hilarious actually. I can tell it was meant to be totally tongue-in-cheek.
