Hmmm ... that's not a sure thing, either. Well, for me, anyway. I've looked it up countless times over the years, and probably still will again in the future  (and one of the characters I play in real life's name is "Stephen"...).

Altho' mispronounciations might be great fodder for the beer geeks, I never understand by brewers don't sometimes "Anglecize" brand names for the US market - I imagine, especially on-premise, brewers might lose sales...

"I'll have a uh, Can... no, er, a Low... a Lou...um, make it a Jev...Jah...ah, fuck it! Gimme a Heineken."

Hmmm, I don't think I've ever heard Jever pronounced "out in the wild" before, so I couldn't say just how often it's getting mangled. But I can say that whenever I've asked for it while saying "Yay-ver", there's never been any confusion or misunderstanding on the other end.

Well, Miller sure Anglicized Lowenbrau in their '70s commercials (@Bitterbill) -- imagine my surprise when I learned the language -- not to mention hearing it pronounced in Germany the first time (never mind the older Munich woman who corrected me on Pow-LAHner Keller ).

Funny that they even have the umlauts in the graphics.

The taste of a "truly great American beer..." oh-kee.

You left out "could of" instead of the correct "could have". That one drives me crazy.

Have you encountered that in writing? By well-established authors? With degrees in English?

    Crazy indeed.

All apologies -- the lesson from that woman was Sal-VAHtor Keller -- memory trick. Now I have to think on who taught me Pow-LAHner...

Never mind that a lot is really something on which to develop real estate.

Since we're airing the grievances of misnomers, I strongly dislike when (because I work in retail and have to hear it hundreds of times) people ask for a beer as if the name of the beer is the name of the brewery, and then butcher that on top of it.
"Do you guys carry any Sculptin Brewing?"
"I'm pretty sure you mean Ballast Point Sculpin right?"
"No, thats not what I'm looking for, you guys don't have it."
(Comes back with a picture of it)
"Right, thats Ballast Point Sculpin IPA, I'll show you where it is."
"Thats what I asked for the first time..."
    (I die a little inside)

I usually ask followup questions on the off chance I'm wrong and there really is a brewery out there by that name. Playing the "know-it-all" role isn't helpful to anyone in my line of work. Sometimes we work it out and find what they are looking for, others, they get frustrated and feel like I'm trying to "correct" them when I'm really just trying to understand. It doesn't take much to know what you're shopping for.

Years ago I worked at a bottle shop and we'd get shipments of Cantillon from time to time. When people would come in asking for "Can't-Eel-Yawn" or "Can't-A-Loon" I'd lie and say we didn't get any.

That's because it isn't:stuck_out_tongue:. Took me a bit to figure that one out... I guess it's just hard to put that first, long umlaut into phonetics though .
