I don't hear an "L" in that pronunciation anywhere -- let alone an apostrophe... :grinning:

I think the issue is the "eel" is really "ee"

    Can't-ee-yawn

When reading, my brain tends to auto correct what's being read, even though it knows it's wrong. Blessing and a curse since it's usually auditory problems I find myself homing in on.

Before this gets too terribly deep, I see the name of the thread is really Mispronouncing and easy brewery name. Much of what we're throwing out wouldn't be considered "easy."

You mean you've never heard of that sweet elixir that is Three Towns beer? It became a massive success, just not in the export markets which it was intended for.

I guess it doesn't bother me very much. Being from the South I use some slang. Probably is most often "Prolly", stuff like that.

Some beer and Breweries are hard to pronounce until you have heard them pronounced correctly. I have pointed to an item on a menu and ask for this one. I usually say something like "I don't know how to pronounce this but this is what I want, How do you pronounce it?"

It usually works! Sometimes I get a chuckle or an amused grin! I just tell them "yeah, I'm a Redneck".

Part of the problem with pronunciations is that you'll see and hear lots of different versions given as the answer (with some of them even wrong rather than a simple variation or interpretation). I usually see Chimay written as she-may, shi-may, or shee-may. I tend to think of she-may only because Michael Jackson had it like that. Going to the source is usually the most reliable, but that too can vary a little or a lot. You can use this as a guide:

And if you take a look at the other videos they've uploaded, you'll find the same video in other languages. Don't expect Chimay to sound exactly the same in every instance across the videos or within just one video.

I bet that Chimay is pronounced incorrectly far more often than it's said in the proper ballpark.

I would think some very common mispronunciations in beer are:

    Duvel
    Hefeweizen
    Smithwicks
    Helles
    Tsingtao
    Hoegaarden

and maybe we can now add Gose to the ranks

I came here to say this. I visited Smithwicks in Ireland last year with my best friend, who admittedly is NOT a beer guy, and he was butchering the name of the brewery to the bartender. I finally pulled him aside and gave him the correct pronunciation and he looked at me puzzled. lol
