I have a empty Mississippi mud black and tan bottle with a yellow stamp from 1979 on it. I have had the bottle for about 15 years now. How do I find out if that is the real date when this bottle was made ?
It's unlikely it be other than the date printed, unless the number is a mold number from the bottle maker.
I'd suggest that you post your question in the Breweriana forum. The folks over there might be able to help. Good luck, and welcome aboard!
Welcome to the BA site, Bigdog. Yeah, this thread likely will be moved to the Brewerania forum where it will be seen by the members who hang out there. I agree with @beertunes that the sticker likely signifies its year of creation of the bottle, however, I don't know if that beer was available back then. I wouldn't spend much time looking into this because old beer bottles never garner much value beyond a buck or two. Edit: I just looked, and this beer was added to the BA database in 2001, so that is its kikely year of being first brewed. I don't know what that means for your sticker. https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/638/1741/ P.S. The first review says a lot about the beer. It should become a classic.
According to a quote in this article: https://chilledmagazine.com/mississippi-mud-black-tan-beer-now-in-16-oz-cans Production of Mississippi Mud started in 1992. Apparently the beer is also now available in cans instead of jugs. “We’ve been producing Mud since 1992 and it immediately developed a cult-like following,” said Chairman Don Vultaggio. “We’re happy to be offering it in a new package that will excite the consumer and continue to be a fan favorite.”
Yeah, no way that beer even existed in 1979. Pretty sure in was initially contract-brewed in Memphis by Coors when they owned the former Schlitz/Stroh brewery. (A least then the "Mississippi" made sense). Eventually it moved to F X Matt, in Utica NY, so the city on the label gives a hint to year.. Never heard of a brewery putting a "sticker" on a regularly released beer designating the year.
I'm Michigan born and bred! My wife, on the other hand... She's the one who first told me I was a Yankee.
Funny coincidence, I was in the Oak Brook, IL Binnys this week and they had a display of the Jugs. My first thought was " Didn't know they still made that stuff".
