Have you ever opened a mix pack in-store to switch a couple of bottles with another mix pack before buying it? Is it legal to do so?

I've never felt the need to do that, nor had to as I make my own mix sixes. It's definitely not good manners without asking, an etiquette faux pas, but I don't know if it's illegal where you live.
    Cheers!

If you mean, with a mixed 12 pack with 3 of each beer, taking 3 of the ones you don't like and switch with another mixed pack so you have 6 of what you like and the other one has 6 of what you don't like, the answer is NO NO NO. That's a douche move if ever I heard of one. Some unsuspecting customer is going to get a mixed 12 pack with 3 different beers instead of 4. If you don't mean this, never mind.
The point is, if you don't like everything that's in the 12 pack, either don't buy it or switch with someone else after you have purchased it.

Illegal here in Ohio. I could charge you with theft of the entire mixed pack that you left behind, now "damaged" and no good for sale. It would be theft as opposed to criminal damaging because you're taking a piece of the product in the course of rendering it unsuitable for sale. A shop owner may just want you to pay for both if caught, but by the letter of the law you could be charged and I wouldn't be surprised one bit.

Same goes with taking bottles not included in a "build your own six pack" section and putting them in one. For instance, I once saw someone charged for theft by deception after they filled a "make your own six pack" (flat rate of $9.99) with six bottles of FBS ($12 a 4-pack here). Those six bottles of FBS were therefore worth $18, and the person was charged for theft by deception in the amount of $8.01.

For fucks sake. How many beeradvocates didn't go to kindergarten? Seems like very few people here recognize that their actions impact others. If you take the bottles and switch them in a mixed pack that means the next person who buys a mixed pack is losing out on beers they potentially really wanted. It shouldn't have to be illegal for you not to do it.

So what I'm saying is, stop doing it. It's not worth having to answer 'yes' to "Have you ever been convicted of a crime?" on every job application for the rest of your life just because you think those two Boston Lagers are BS and would rather have more Whitewater IPAs.

Just imagine if you were on the other side of this- you came into the store, looking for your favorite 6 pack for a great weekend. They only have one left! That's great, I'll grab it! But when you get up to it, it's not 6 bottles of your favorite beer. It's 3 of your favorite beer, and 3 more of some lesser beers that some asshat switched out last time he was there. You'd be mad, wouldn't you? You'd feel like that person cheated the system, wouldn't you? Don't be an asshat.

    EDIT:

I guess maybe he was talking about mix-packs, a la Sam Adams, but my sentiment still stands anyway.

This. Don't be a dooshbag, pretty simple rule to follow I would think. Too bad it seems to need reinforcing with what I would assume to be adults on a alcohol forum

Not sure how this could ever be OK, unless perhaps you're talking about a store that creates its own pre-made mixed six-packs.

Is it ok to go grocery shopping, and do the same with food?

Seriously, is this an honest question you are asking?

I highly doubt the thread starter is looking for any real advice, just affirmation. Seems like he's hoping some one will say, "of course it's OK to deface the stores inventory for your own benefit!"

As long as you give the shop owner a cheerful "go fuck yourself" on the way out, I think you're good.
