Has this ever happened to you guys? I normally ignore the mix six section at my local store, knowing that it'll be more expensive than just buying a six pack of something that I enjoy. But I decided to take a look the other day, and was pretty surprised at what I found - several offerings from $11-12 six packs...and the mix price is $10. And since all of the bottles are specifically marked for that section, I know that it wasn't just some random customer throwing bottles in there. Now, I know that some stores will offer discounts for buying X number of bombers, or maybe four different six packs, but I've never seen a pick-a-six work out to be less expensive than any of the packs that the beers originally came out of. Anyone else have good luck with their mix options?
Yeah, I occasionally find decent 4-pack bottles in the mix-a-six selection. I can't pass it up when I find an Old Rasputin or Tank 7 along with the normal selection. I'm that guy who peers up and down the shelf so I can see what's in the back of the rack in the mix-a-six section. Our Kroger has 8.99 mixed sixers, so that's $1.50 per, and it's hard to pass up some beers for that price.
Over here they take 10% off every mix a six. Thats pretty cool but it doesnt compare to what grocery chains like Kroger do which charge a flat rate like the guy said above. I like mix a six a lot but it does have its drawbacks such as having to sift through individual bottles to find the bottling/experation date and a lot of times they have a lot of old bottles on the shelves. I got a bottle of SN Narwhal for 2.99 which was pretty good because I didnt want to pay 10.99 for the 4 pack and I wanted to try it to see if I liked it.
Mix six is not a better deal around here. One beer could run anywhere from $1.75 to $5 or more for stuff like evil twin. I'll take great lakes for $8.99 Alex.
I've seen the math come close before, but definitely be wary of age of the beers, especially if an IPA. I do a lot of Total Wine mix sixers, but they don't have a discount to do 6 and each beer is individually priced.
Kroger does that. I'm not sure of the normal price of 90 Minute, but I feel like it's more than $10 (11 or 12?). You could make a mix-a-six of just that beer for $10. Too bad my Kroger has recently been having a bunch of shitty beers in their section. I don't even bother mixing there anymore.
I've seen this before at a grocery store next to me. They will sell a 6 pack of Oberon for $9.99 but they put bottles of Oberon in the mix-six area and they charge $7.99 for the mix-sixers. Sometimes they put older bottles in there so I avoid IPAs but my wife doesn't mind with the Oberon.
I almost lost my shit when I visited Rochester in July when I saw Great Lakes sixers for 8.99. Wish I would've brought more back to RI with me.
When I would usually mix a six I would usually spend anywhere between 12 and 16 bucks. Depending on what's available it's more economical to just buy 6 packs or 4 packs here in RI.
I know that in other places such as New York City, Whole Foods charges a different price for each beer in a mix-a-sixer but allows the buyer to mix just about any beer available at the store. Here in New Mexico, Whole Foods has a flat rate of $8.99 but restricts the selection to certain beers. You'll never find anything extravagant in there, but it's probably the cheapest way to try different seasonals or regular offerings for which you don't want a whole sixer.
One of the newer Giants in Arlington, VA has no clue what it's doing beer-wise. They charge a flat $9.99 to build your own six pack and feature a rotating selection that has sometimes included things like Expedition Stout, Delirium Tremens, Palo Santo, La Fin du Monde... the list goes on. Of course, that was over a year ago, but needless to say I exploited this scenario to the fullest when I lived in the area.
Where I am grocery stores usually are a good deal when it comes to mix-a-sixes. However the selection is limited. Bottle Shops on the other hand are iffy because it all depends on the store you can be getting a deal or end up spending $20 on a six pack. (also depends on what you're buying too)
A lot of places, however, only allow you to have two of the same variety in the mix six section, so you aren't supposed to "mix" 6 of the same beers to get the $10 price as opposed to buying a 6 pack of a certain beer. That's how it is at our Wegman's anyways.
Seen SN Narwhal and Bigfoot in a mix-6 for $8.99 and the 4-pack about 10 feet away was the same price.
