(How) Does one mix beer properly, if at all, the US?

The only instance I've seen was while at Hopcat in Grand Rapids. Bartender mixed some sort of Porter with another Raspberry Porter.

What can I mix? Should I try mixing beers from two different breweries/ brew styles. I believe the instance at Hopcat were two brews from the same brewing co.

I have the urge to buy some sort of liqueur, probably coffee, and mix it with various porters or stouts.
    What say you?

I lived in Germany for a year. In a small farming village in the outskirts of Dachau/Munich. I didn't fall in love with beer as I have here in the US, but i definitely learned to appreciate beer.

Mixing beer there was quite common.

Raddler- Half German Lager, half lemonade. Marvelous, especially on a hot summers day or as a mid-workday break

    Hefeweizens with Coca-Cola

    MY FAVORITE- A Bavarian speciality...
The Goaß Maß. (Goat's Liter!). One part Dunklweizen, one part Coca-Cola, and one shot of Cherry liqueur. Tastes like candy.

I don't know... I think a beer should stand alone. I don't want fruit or anything else added to my beer. I'm of the opinion that if you need to add something to a beer to make it good, you should probably choose a different beer. I know people love black and tans and such and that's cool for them. Just this guy's opinion and preference.

If I am trying a new beer, I want it alone to see what it tastes like, but if you want to experiment, than the sky is the limit. Drink what you like. I have had lager and lemonade that was very refreshing. My wife makes red eyes - beer, tomato juice and an olive - they are good as well. I generally drink my beer alone, but mixing it up once in awhile is a good time. I have had a good craft stout and sipped it alternately with a good bourbon, and I thought that was amazing, better than any cocktail.

Some good mixes I recently tried:
Oberon and Torpedo - Oberon really balances out the bitterness, makes a damn fine beer.
Oberon and Harpoon IPA - Same as above, liked it better though.
Harpoon and Torpedo - Not so great

I am a purist, I think beer should be drank as it comes from the brewery. That said a few nights ago I mixed a Heady Topper with a Schlafly Pumpkin to make a Pumpkin Head(y)....it certainly wasn't bad, but both beers are far better on their own.

That being said, I am sure there are some good combos out there, but I don't think I'll be doing any more experimenting.

The only beers I've mixed in a 50/50 ratio are DFH 60 with DFH 90. Absolutely scrumptious!

I used to mix Boulevard Single Wide IPA with Boulevard Unfiltered Wheat but now with Boulevard 80-Acre Hoppy Wheat out I don't need to mix any more.

When Founders had a ginger beer on tap that was super strong in flavor, I had them mix it with their porter and it was surprisingly good. The ginger was way overpowering on its own, so in that case mixing it worked out well.

Few months ago picked up a growler of Haymarket Indignant(BA Stout). Couldn't finish by meself in 3 days. Day 5 was good but a little funky, opened a Raspberry Tart and did a 50/50 mix. Homemade Bramble(kind of). Plus it was a pricey growler that I could not waste. Worked for me

Its all about your personal taste, so I'd say the only wrong way of doing it is if it turns out to be something you don't like. I personally am not at all into mixing beers. I (strike me dead, I know) didn't even enjoy it when it was done "professionally" in the Firestone Walker 15th anniversary ale. I also don't like raddlers/shandys, beer cocktails, etc. HOWEVER, I AMMM a HUGE fan of mixing them with ice cream!!! I haven't experimented much with it but any time I've thrown a scoop or 2 of vanilla ice cream into a stout it was delicious.
