Ugh, come on guys, they're seriously not using the term whalez properly. Sometimes I doubt Modem Tones' commitment to serious business!

lol i check on my sarcasm detector, but marketing aside imo their BA hasnt be that good. I always used to toss in some blazing world in my trades as extras, and their normal Monster park is solid. but i just think 30 bucks for a beer that hasnt been good yet, well it is not my cup of tea.

Im sure my lack of patronage will not bring MT down, just not a fan of how they are doing business, but just wanted to give my opinion.

You forgot cockstaggeringly, that has been my favorite thus far.

I actually can't read their emails anymore due to the copy, with "cockstaggering" being the worst offender. "But, like, it's so ironic, bro!" Sure. I guess. Sort of in the same vein that steampunk is ironic... Someone pass the mustache wax!

Also, interesting turn of face by MT on the whole GABF Pro-Am thing. Holding a homebrew contest to determine which one is "the best"? And then submitting to that into the Pro-Am competition as, ostensibly, a serious entry (rather than the Juggalo-themed beer they put in last year)? You're getting soft, McKean! What happened to the meaningnlessness of beer competitions and fighting the power?!

PS: if you win, you better raise the fist on the medal stand!

Do you guys think these beers will still be on tap after the release party next Thursday?

I have to say that overall, MT is doing a pretty damn good job at running their business given the relative short time they've been in existence. They've experienced a couple of hiccups, but have accomplished quite a bit and are making some excellent brews.

My only bitch is the shitty parking at the fermitorium. I can live with that.

Really? I feel like it's pretty east to find parking nearby, and I'm there at least once a week.

Very excited about this release, but it is almost prohibitively expensive. I wish they staggered it somehow. Huge financial hit to take all at once, but I guess when the beer is ready, the beer is ready. Looking forward to trying these.

They'll probably check after the fact to make sure that you're an actual member, so even if someone did send it to you, it'd be worthless.

It's hard to say. Maybe some make it through Friday, but I wouldn't bet beyond that.

Ha, even their special release tap handles say "Danksauce Whales" as the description

they're clearly using the term whalez in a tongue in cheek manner. I dont think they are expecting these to become KBBS or anything.

Ill be skipping this release. $150 for the set is just too much.

I hope the prices keep rising on these BA Monsters Park releases so we can see the breaking point

The second batch was excellent, I'm not sure what you're looking for in a BA stout if you didn't like Batch 2 BA MP. Why did you think it was "meh at best"?

As others have pointed out, FW is the outlier here, not Modern Times. I don't think the BA MP beers are a great value by any means, but I also don't think the prices are unreasonable, especially considering rum barrels cost more than bourbon barrels.

I love Modern Times and loved all the Monster's Park variants so far...but at this price point I will probably just get the vanilla variant to give it a try. Truth is that I don't like rum barrels, but even if I would, (especially at 6 months aging) I think it's just too expensive. Don't mean to sound to grumpy, but I think $20-23 was already a little too much for a bomber of MP, so I'm not feeling like paying a lot more, for a barrel treatment I probably wouldn't like as much as bourbon.

BTW, can someone explain why rum barrels are more expensive? Just curious. Also, if this batch was aged for only 6 months, I'm assuming those barrels will be reused?

I want to say that Rum barrels are used repeatedly, so there's fewer to go around. I swear I read that some where, but I can't seem to find the article.... I might be wrong.

I do know that some rum is solera aged so the barrels are continuously used.

    1) Less overall supply than bourbon barrels since not all rum is barrel aged and some countries allow rum barrels to be re-used multiple times as @tyrsis said.
    2) There's more cost associated in transporting a rum barrel from a foreign country than there is in trucking a bourbon barrel from a US distillery.
    3) There are well-established brokerages that handle the sales of used bourbon barrels to breweries, whereas rum barrels are a less developed market. I'm guessing there's more time and effort involved in sourcing them than simply calling up a US bourbon barrel broker.

Thought it was thin and lacking in ba flavor I think that the base beer is good. But if ur going to charge black tuesday or vanilla rye prices, I do expect a higher quality of beer. I agree with @grze that 23 bucks would be more in line with the ba beer that they are making.

30 bucks is a fair price to ask for a BA, but to me Mt doesn't belong in this weight class yet.

My dislike for MT doesn't make this forum's love wrong or invalid. Just expressing my opinion. We are all here cuz we love beer.
