Anyone else have this experience? I had this beer when it first came out and loved it...then recently had a can which I presume are a new batch and it tastes totally different...

I remember it being very hoppy (fruity and tropical hops) and this time it seems very malty and bready?

    Anyone else experience this?

I didn't have it the first time around, but the can I recently got smelled a whole lot like melted butter. Yet the taste was fresh.

The beer in the can...not the can itself.

I know this is an obvious question, but how did the bottling date to drinking differ?

Just had one today and it was super tropical and sweet on the onset with a good biscuity malt backbone and a bitter finish. That said, I'm not very fond of the sweet tropical notes, so this wasn't overly enjoyable to me. Definitely didn't think it was overly malty though.

I bought a 4-pack... I have had two of them so far (never tried it before) and I'm a little put off by this beer... the smell is almost nauseating, I can't put my finger on it. The taste isn't that bad, but I can't get over that aroma, and it ruins the beer for me. Onion, garlic, feet, rotten fruit.... not really sure, but it's the first craft beer that has made me gag and dry heave from the smell alone.

By coincidence, I had it today. I thought Molotov Cocktail TIPA was a sweet boozy mess, so I was hoping that the Lite would be muted in just the right way.

Sadly, I was NOT impressed at all. I thought it was pretty bland as DIPAs go. There was some weird note on the nose that I could not quite place and the flavor was slightly skunky.

    BTW, my sample was on-tap.

I got an off taste as well, it tasted like booze but not in the way that some DIPAs have a little boozy backend, more like cheap vodka or something. There are some really good elements to the beer, but after buying two four packs about 3 months apart and getting that same weird cheap liquor aftertaste I don't think I'll be getting it again. It might be that there's not enough malt/sweetness to cover the booze.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one. I'm a big Evil Twin and thought this was a solid DIPA the first time I had it a few months ago. I picked up a 4pk in NY yesterday and it has this overwhelming buttery taste to it, don't remember this the first time around because it's pretty off putting. 4pk was refrigerated and purchased at a place that handles beer well.

different canning dates...I think the first go round was about 1 month from bottling, 2nd was closer to 2 months...i know it makes a difference but it didnt taste like the beer i had the first time but slightly stale it tasted like a completely different beer...

There was a discussion about this beer last night on New Beer Sunday. The 'buttery' quality is from diacetyl, and I personally thought it was overdone for the style (when it gets too potent it starts to cross over from gently nuanced into that obvious movie theater buttered popcorn territory, which is where it was by the end of my can yesterday).

I guess, the question is- is this a mistake by the brewery, or do they want it to be this way?

Thanks for the info...and I think that is a good question. It was a big surprise for me because the first time around I didnt get the buttery quality at all...

@Roguer mentioned that the brewery is Two Roads, and that this seems to be a house style for some of their other contract brews, including Sip of Sunshine.

At this point I can't comment too much based on only one can, but I suppose it is possible that there are two similar things happening at once- a house character as well as the diacetyl. The problem with 'd', though, is that it is unpredictable in packaged beer, so we may all be picking up varying amounts.
