Interesting. Would be kinda nice to try some local "abbey" beers...

Yep. They have some big hurdles to overcome, however. There's a lot of opposition from the neighbors out that way. They've been implicated somehow in some sort of scandal involving a crowdfunding thing. Some of the opponents to them in general, appear to be sort of biased. This religious order isn't officially Roman Catholic, or affiliated with any other established religion. Some few people describe it as a "cult". I've met the nuns, who sell pastries on weekends at Caputo's in Lake In The Hills. They're nice people. To my unknowing eyes, it's just a small French offshoot of Catholicism that's been around for about 40 years. Whatever. I hope they make a go of it, with the brewery.

Nothing like going to the tasting room next to the hospice building...

How about next to a leaky mausoleum at the height of summer? Would that be better for you?

Cool video of the construction of the Shrine of the Ecce Homo in Marengo. Obviously built by the Brothers and Sisters themselves. I suppose the same techniques and materials will (if they get the permits) go into the brewery/winery as well.

Completion and dedication of the Shrine. They worked day and night in all sorts of weather to get the job done.

Pretty neat. I expect good things from this place once they tweak the recipes- whatever they are. If all goes well, it should open in 2016 or 2017. They are not a Trappist order, so don't expect that on the labels.

I looked up the address on google maps..and it's a huge complex..90 acres i read? From what I can see, there is pretty much nothing around them except for one small subdivision west of a main road. There is plenty of space to put up these building with little to zero impact on any surrounding neighboors, in my opinion. My guess is all this zoning and "putting a 'massive' business in the middle of a residential neighborhood is just bullshit and sounds better than "we think you people are a cult and don't want you here".

~again, i don't live out there, but based on what I see on maps, I can't see how this would any significant impact on anyone.

WilliamN, you are 100% correct, sir. The harassment from neighbors has been ongoing for years. As a matter of fact, here is some evidence from the old Google machine.

Their zoning was not approved last I heard. So AFAIK this is not happening.

I have driven by that area a number of times (there's a golf course down the road I like to go to) and there is nothing but a few houses in the area. I can't see how there are zoning issues. There's got to be something more to this.

Are these nuns planning to brew the beer themselves or license out their 'nunness' & use of their monastery brewery to outside brewers and the church gets some sort of percentage from it? If the latter it seems a bit inauthentic to me. It would then probably involve some cockamamie recipe back story like that place in Wauconda. Yes I'm too lazy to read any of the above links.
