This. Even if they sell/make 20 more cases than usual they would sell out. So what's stopping you Monkish? Hype? Cause you obviously have the opportunity to produce more and still sell out the same day.

Gotta keep the hype alive. The beer tastes much better that way.

Soon as the hazy days die out Monkish will become a Belgium, Sour, Lambic brewery only once again and put out a sign in the taproom saying, "No haze to be found here"

Wow, some of you guys just can't wrap your heads around the truth that not everyone is driven by profit.

If they expand there will be less hype. As hazies die down there will be less hype. It's not really that hard of a concept to me as to why they wouldn't expand.

In regards to expansion, I agree. But changing the raison d'etre of your brewery several years in to focus almost entirely on chasing a trend? That appears very much to be profit driven.

this "leaving large profits on the table" seems short sighted since expanding could very well cost them a great deal of time, trouble and money. And while I also don't think the "fade" or whatever will fade, keeping it dialed in the way they are now is probably to their advantage. I mean, we saw what happened when Bootleggers expanded and things were not scaling up properly.

Add in that you have to add man power to brewing with bigger systems, what some see as leaving profits on the table others will see as not having to deal with nonsense and high risk

Speaking of the Boot. Aren’t they expanding into Costa Mesa near Gunwhale and Barly Fart? Or was that somebody else?

Then why are they in a for profit business? And why did they change their business model to make ipa’s? Why do they charge $20 a four pack, when they could easily charge $15 and make a decent profit. Why charge $20ish for a growler fill when $15 would allow them to make a profit. To say monkish isn’t making beer for the profits is ridiculous.
Of course expansion will cost money and take time. All risk do, but this risk seems relatively minimal. To compare them to bootleggers is crazy, they haven’t made a great beer in 4-5 years. I am also not talking about them opening a giant facility. They produce about 200 cases a week in cans, if they doubled or tripled that it would still sell out in hours. They could do a 100 case release a day and their beer wouldn’t last long. Hell, maybe send a few kegs out to local bars more than a couple times a year.

You know, I'm an independent consultant who makes a comfortable living working about 30 hours a week. If I wanted to work 40-50 hours a weeks, and hired a couple of subcontractors, I could easily double, even triple my profits. Why don't I? Because I'm not driven by profits; I've got a lot of other shit I want to do. Maybe "driven" is confusing you . . . I mean motivated by, inspired by, make meaning by. Some people just don't get it.

I mean, they could be making more money if they opened at noon every day.. or hell, 9am every day and closed at 2am nightly. Sure, it'll require the hassle of getting a different permit (can't be that bad, can it?) and getting different alcohol licensing! They're just leaving money on the table not open as many hours as legally allowed to serve alcohol!

Yeah, that rationale doesn't fly there either. The risk, in expansion, is not worth the work or reward. So let it go.

OK - done some back of the envelope calculations and I've solved Monkish's expansion issues for them:

    • Beer sales are roughly 100 billion dollars a year.
    • Monkish makes only a *fraction* of 100 billion dollars.
    • They need to expand until they can produce 100 billion dollars worth of beer.
    • It's unlikely they'd be able to get the hop contracts for that so they need to sell to InBev.
    • Most beer drinkers prefer domestic lagers so they need to start brewing that as their primary beer (better margins on it as well).
    • Three new flagship beers: Monkish, Monkish Light, and Monkish Ice. Available in cases at most grocery stores.
No more demand issues and the Monkish crew can retire and let other people run the business for them.

It appears these idiots prefer to make less money and work more. My business knowledge is only from a few Trump University classes I audited, but it's clear that me, or anyone else on this forum could solve their expansion issues for them.

    Stupid.

Or worse yet, Alpine  I know that was a whole different story than simply expanding but still...:cry::cry:

Just think about all the money he would be leaving on the table if he hired someone new?! Come on, my mail order business degree tells me that he should totally expand and fire half the staff to save on money he could be making.

It seems inevitable since she has the secret sauce that sooner than later Three Weavers starts dropping Monkish clones.
