Surprised nobody has mentioned this new IPA. I like it because its a new creative recipe of three great hops, Citra, El Dorado and Motueka, instead of a reworked recipe we see at times by changing out a hop here and there. I also like the carbonation level on this better than others. Really nice effort from Henry and the crew. LA. Hat is still on as well but not for Growlers.

    Cheers,

I think your going to really like this new release, great marriage of three of my favorite hops and they nailed it. I loved LA Hat too, but this is a different beast.

Hate to admit it but I'm definitely one of those sheep.

Until I can find something locally with a similar mouthfeel and taste though, most of my beer money will continue to go to Monkish for cans and growlers. Couldn't care less about the appearance itself though.

What criteria are used to qualify someone for inclusion in the sheep category? Is it only adherence to hazy IPA trend? How about fruited beers? Adjuncts in general? Sours? Saisons? American tart saisons? Barrel aging? Imperializing? Sessionizing? These are all trends and I'd wager a majority of people on BA enjoy most if not all of those types of beer. Does that make us all sheep?

What I see in many of these NE styled IPAs, not just Monkish, is a lack of variation in the recipe's that tend to make them indistinguishable from one another after drinking a few. On the other hand I also really enjoy drinking the IPAs from Monkish, would I ever wait in line for a beer...no,but thats me, feel free if you want, I won't judge. I can drop in to Monkish when they have something that sounds good to me on tap and thats enough to scratch my NE style IPA itch. What these hazy IPAs do though is make me realize how great a well made west coast IPA tastes too, and we can mix and match as we choose, it's all just beer right ?

    Cheers,

It's good to switch it up. My last two fills at Cellarmaker have been on the danker side rather than hazy.

Anyone manage to get over in time to pick up one of those barrels yesterday? Bummed I just missed grabbing one.

I would hypothesize that it is not simply "a lack of variation in the recipe's [sic]," but the fundamental nature of the "NE style IPA" that tends to make them indistinguishable from one another after drinking a few. These beers have suspended yeast particulate that creates a milky, muddled mouthfeel. That's what people seem to crave about them, because when they're done correctly, it makes a very smooth, supremely drinkable beer that still has a beautifully fragrant hop aroma. On the flipside, this also "blurs the edges" of the flavors in the beer, creating a lack of definition of the hop character and even the malt base. The yeastiness also begins to coat your palate, which dulls the ability to perceive nuance, subtlety, and any diversity of flavors. The only solution? MORE COWBELL! It's easy to keep on drinking the same one you've got, but if you want to go on and try other beers and get the most out of them, it's very difficult.

I'm not trying to slag on these beers, because I think they have their place, and I'm learning to love what they *do* bring to the table. Some of them that I've had (Water Balloon Fighters, Spock It, Tree House Juice Machine) have had simply stunning aromas that pretty much justify the existence of the entire style. But they definitely lend to a different type of beer drinking, and appreciation. You take the bad with the good, I guess.

I wish it was actually feasible to go to these releases and get cans without waiting 6 hours in line.
