    Hey, everyone.

Back in June 2018, the provincial government of Quebec passed a law that allows establishments with restaurants to sell a customer alcohol without requiring the customer to also purchase food, which is what the old law required. Does anyone know if this new law has actually been implemented yet? I plan on doing some brasserie/brewery hopping in Montreal in a couple of weeks, and if I'm going to need to buy food in all of the spots, I'll need to prepare my stomach for the adventure.

Also, at the top of my list are:

Dieu du Ciel (went to once a few years back)
    Isle de Garde
    Harricana
    MaBrasserie
Vices & Versa (not a brewery but a great beer bar I've been to once)

Any feedback on the list would also be welcomed.

    Thanks, all!

I don't think that that law actually applies in any earth-shattering way to any of those places. I think it has more of an effect on cafés and restaurants that happen to have alcohol (which have a different permit). All of those places are primarily beer places that happen to have food and you already could drink at all of them without food (they are basically bars).

My understanding of the change you're talking about is that now if you go to a café or a lunch counter or something that happens to have beer and wine you could in theory just have a drink. It shouldn't negatively affect your trip though as those types of places usually don't have very good beer anyway. All that said, you probably should still eat at some point  Have fun!

On a semi-related note, both Isle de Garde and Vices et Versa have very good food.

Thanks much for the info, man.

And, you're totally right, I should eat at some point!

I had forgotten all about this.

The Doctor is correct. It won’t affect you, if it is still an issue, at the places you plan to visit.

Anecdotally, as a youth many, many aeons ago, while living in NDG, my friends and I would go to the Chalet BBQ on Sherbrooke near Decarie to drink because a 2 litre pitcher of beer was $5.50 on week nights. We would have to buy food though. So, very slowly, we would share a side order of fries between the 5 or 6 of us all night long!

I think most places allowed one to skirt the restriction in a similar fashion.

"Having" to eat at Chalet BBQ is a small price to pay.:yum: Some of the best chicken you can get IMO. It's like eating in a time capsule, too. It probably was back when you frequented it too hahaha.

I agree 100%. I loved the chicken there, and at the one on Decarie near the old Armstrong tile plant south of Namur. Cote St Luc BBQ was great too. The chicken is nothing like the chain that is big here in Ontario with a similar name.

Indeed it was a time capsule, even 20-25 years back when I was going there. My dad worked at Armstrong and I can remember going to the Decarie location back in the early ‘80s when my mom and I would meet him for lunch. I’m pretty sure it had a vintage feel even back then too!

This is making me feel a bit nostalgic. I could really go for a Mommesso’s sub right about now too!

If you ever make it back for a visit, I live pretty close and am always down for some chicken and beer. Now if only they would allow BYOB at places like that...

I haven’t made it back since having twins just over two years ago. That said, my closest friends still live in NDG, and I hope to get back later this year. I will try to take you up on this. Cheers!

To the OP. Sorry for hijacking your thread.

FYI. At Vice & Versa on Jan 19th there will be a Bellwoods Tap takeover. Bellwoods is one Toronto and is arguably one of the best breweries in the country. If you will be there that day, might be something to check out.

    Cheers.

In Hull I remember a place where they had a sandwich they would give you in case the inspector showed up...everyone shared the same sandwich at the table. No one dared eat the sandwich...it was probably as old as I was.

Ha! No worry about the hijacking! That was a fun read.

Thanks much for the tip on the Bellwoods tap takeover. Sounds like I should try to pop in.

Bellwoods has announced the line up for the takeover at Vices & Versa. Black Liquids 2 is like drinking a peanut butter cookie, if that is your kind of thing.

    Cheers.
