Can anyone provide a recommendation for where to get a quick and easy pour around Rue Sherbrooke / Rue Ste.-Catherine between Westmont and Rue Peel? I'll be in town this weekend... on foot, with three teenage girls who'll be shopping while I'm bored off my nut. Someplace I can get in and out of easily, rather than just denting a stool and fading into insensibility. And someplace that won't get me in trouble with my wife when I get home and my daughter tells her where she found me.

I'd go for Brutopia or Hurley's though the latter can get crowded depending on when you go. Another option is Biermarkt, some say service is so-so but i've been treated well when i went.

I would second the Biermarkt suggestion. It has the best selection that you'll find downtown, should have some local stuff from on tap and when your daughters find you you can buy their silence with some poutine or charcuterie.

Thanks! Bier Markt looks good - a little further away from where I'm staying but, if I'm doing it right, the walk will do me good. And it looks like I'll walk past Brutopia on my way. (I grew up in Boston so, just on general principal, I refuse to go into Irish bars).

Follow-up question: what three beers should I not miss on draft? I haven't been downtown in, probably, twenty years - last time I was there, I was probably drinking Labatt!

Hurley's has a pretty lackluster beer selection. If you can manage the detour, Benelux would be my choice for downtown brews.

I'm not a regular there or anything, but every time I've been to Biermarkt they at least have Péché Mortel and Le Castor Yakima on tap. In my opinion Yakima is the best or at least one of the best IPAs in QC, and Péché is Péché. Also keep an eye out for any other DDC beers, Trou du Diable, Dunham (if they have it), Charlevoix, etc. Although they kind of specialize in imports since they are not super frequent in bars here. I agree with @MCBanjoMike that Benelux is great for awesome local beers you won't find elsewhere if you can swing a trip that way. Downtown is kind of a wasteland of Irish pubs.

Sounds good. I have to keep reminding myself that I'm making this trip for the kids. They'll be more fun in a few years when I can take them into bars with... (whoops, parenting-fail).

Good bottle shops on the way in... Route 10 to 15?

    (Shudder).

The Fromagerie Atwater at Atwater Market is pretty close. They aren't the most extensive but they have a good selection. Also good cheese. And it is in a cool historic market next to a canal/park with beautiful fall leaves. Perfect destination to get your kids some cider and you some bottles.

Does this mean that you'll be driving on the 10 for a while? If you drive past Ange-Gardien, you have to check out Le Marché du Village, a large grocery store just off the 10. Inside is one of the best beer selections in the province, and it's staffed by friendly, knowledgeable folks who are happy to make recommendations. Almost as good as Peluso, and it'll be right on your way if you are taking the 91 up through the Stanstead crossing.

Perfect! I need to bring home some Péché Mortel for sure... assuming the girls leave any room in the trunk for me, what else should I be on the lookout for?

I'm not a stout drinker, so I can't help you there. I get excited over limited releases by Pit Caribou, or I guess that new brewery Auval, but I haven't tried anything from the latter. Ange-Gardien is near Dunham, so you might be able to find some of their harder-to-get beers. For IPAs, I've recently come around on good old Moralité, at least if it's fresh (the 6-packs are dated). Ask the staff, they'll have lots to suggest depending on the styles you like! It's also an SAQ (provincially-run liquor store), which means they might have some decent Belgian beers in stock, too. Don't know if they're hard to find around where you live, but you might score some Rochefort 8 or 10, and they'll almost certainly have Chimay Grande Réserve. Decent glassware selection, too.

Aphrodisaque is another good stout from DDC. I am pretty sure it is available in the states, too, but under a different name. Most anything from DDC is good and a lot of it will only be available here. Also for stouts I heard tell that the MacAuslan St-Ambroise Imperial Stout stout has already come out (it's seasonal) if you find it, get it. It is very good. The store that @MCBanjoMike recommended has a cellar apparently, so either way you may be able to buy older bottles if stouts are your thing.

If you like Belgians, Charlevoix makes a lot of really good stuff. Their 750ml bottles are particularly good. Dunham makes a Black IPA that just showed up again in stores and it is fabulous; also excellent saisons amongst other things. Pit Caribou, Le Castor, Trou du Diable, Beau's (good lagers), etc. The hardest part will be choosing.:flushed:

Holy cow! What an awesome-looking store. Looks like you just decided my next "needless" detour for me.

Gah, somehow I missed it on the way in - I guess I got onto 10 too far west. Hopefully I can find it tomorrow because it looks like someplace I really need to spend some time at.

If you're still in the area, try Naufrageur's St-Barnabe, an excellent regular stout.

Gotta give the doctor some credit here You wont be disapointed with Yakima or peche, they are absolutely fantastic. and I'd say Yakima has to be the best Canadian IPA I've tried.

If you're coming up on the 89, it won't be directly on your path. If you go home via the 91, it'll be right on the way.

Well, I never did get to Le Marché du Village... what with all the whining in the back seat I got back onto the 15 heading the wrong way, took a half-hour tour of the wrong end of the city and just got onto the 35 heading south as soon as I could - with sleet, snow and frozen bridges all the way to Brattleboro, VT.

BUT I did walk down to Fromagerie Atwater on Sunday morning while the girls were sleeping in. What a nice place - and nice people! The beer cellar is fairly small but very well stocked. I spent a half hour picking up bottles and turning them around before heading back - on foot, uphill with a backpack! - with a six of Péché Mortel and a few bottles of Yakima.

Thanks all for the recommendations - I'll be back to try everything I missed this time!

That's a heck of a hill, too! Thanks for reporting back. I am always curious what happens to people who ask for advice since they generally never report back on what they did/found.

I think it looks good in my Trillium tulip...

Here it is, back in New Hampshire. It's the same colours as my tablecloth!

It's a beautiful beer! I'd actually had, um, a few of them? Saturday night while I was killing time so I knew I wanted to bring some home with me. It compares very favorably with some of my usuals from New England like Fort Point and Stone Face while staying, somehow, truer to the character of a traditional IPA. So, all the flavor and complexity without the sensation of drinking fruit pulp.

Well done, Le Castor! I wish they'd get it distro'd south of the border.

Check out St Bock. A little bit of a walk, buy well worth it. Lots of beers fresh and on tap, mostly their own, with some other great locals as well. Biermarket(there are 2 locations downtown),Benelux and Dieu Du Ciel are also worth stopping in for.

Reviving this thread. I have plans to go to many of the places recommended above when I am in Montreal, but does any one have any good beer/food recommendations by the Botanical Garden/Olympic Stadium? I will likely be spending most of the day around there and would like a short bike/walk to a nice place.

You'll be very close to L'espace publique (a brewpub) and La bièrolgue (a bottleshop). I couldn't really say as far as food goes, sorry.

From the Olympic Stadium, you could bike to Péluso (best bottle shop in town) in probably 10 minutes. Then head north and you could go check out MaBrasserie! Don't know when you'll be in town, but they're planning on opening a tap room with 48 lines of local beer. It's already mostly-built, I expect it'll be up and running within a month or so.

Around the stadium is a pretty bad neighbourhood for food, though. I work around there and the restaurant choices are really lackluster. There's Station F on Rachel that's supposed to be good, but I've never been myself. If you make it as far as the promenade Masson (between Iberville and St-Michel) you can find some decent options, but normally when I want a good restaurant I look farther west.

Planning on hitting up Péluso already. MaBrasserie! looks like a good option and is about a kilometer from where I will be staying, so we could hit that up on the way back. I'll be there in early June so looks like it'll be open by then.

OP, you could hit up La succursale, get a poutine at Frites alors! and check out Frigo de bacchus while there.

You'll have a great time. Not only are you coming at a great time of year, and not only are you willing to use bikes, but you will be in one of the best general areas for beer on the whole island. Usually people that visit are downtown the whole time and are cut off from pretty much any options whatsoever in the good local beer department as a result.
    Have fun!
