Moonlight Brewing: one of the best kept secrets as far as I'm concerned. Poor distribution outside of Northern California, and not available in bottles, but a world-class and very unique brewery. Brian Hunt is a maverick who does things his own way, doesn't give a shit about popularity, and is 100% dedicated to brewing tasty, unique beers.

    Death & Taxes
    Reality Czeck
    Prison Wages
    Legal Tender
    Points North
    Misspent Youth

    All unique, delicious beers.

Post here if you've had, and enjoyed a brew from Moonlight.

Some people know about Moonlight. When I had a keg of D&T I had several requests for growlers. But being almost entirely DONG makes it tough for BA to care, even if locals love them.

Ever notice when we do a tasting all the early comers to beer rev look at the board and mostly pick what Moonlight they have on. Love me some Working for Tips.

Yes yes yes. Death and taxes was one of my first regular craft brews that I started drinking when I first moved to SF -- and it's still a personal favorite. Can't say that for too much as my tastes have changed so much. Brian Hunt is a brewing genius and certainly deserves some props. Once that tasting room opens I will be visiting!

One of my favorite lines on this site was years ago, when somebody said (paraphrasing) that the quickest way to get ignored for the rest of the night at Toronado was to walk in and ask for a taster of Death And Taxes.

Also, how did you leave Twist of Fate off your appreciation list? If I am remembering correctly, I think that Twist and D&T are Moonlight's longest brewed beers. I was getting my Master's and living in Berkeley in the early 90's when these beers started to show up at places like Barclay's, Jupiter, etc.

I listed the ones I'm most familiar with. Also, Berkeley is spelled Berkeley, not Berkley. If you received a master's degree from Berkeley, you should probably know this.:wink:

Fixed, but I never said that I received my degree from Berkeley (I assume you mean UC Berkeley), I said that I was living there. But even that was just being vague, because I actually lived in Piedmont, but less people would know where I meant if I had said that.

Also, that is twenty + years ago and it is 1:00 in the morning, so I think that I am allowed a typo of a single letter.

Ack. Sorry, I had been on hold with Comcast for 2 hours trying to get them to fix my cable when I posted that. Overly aggro. They got the best of me.

    Glad you enjoy Moonlight.

Never had Twist Of Fate. How is it?

I adore Moonlight; everything I've had by Mr. Hunt I've really enjoyed. Last time I was in SF I went to nopa with a few friends for brunch and they had a Moonlight sour. No one knew what it was called so I emailed Brian about it:

    "Hello Samantha,
Yes, Nopa is a great place, eh? They get all the fun beers from me. That beer was a special blend of some well-aged beers which I called Prison Wages. Later I found I had used that name a couple years ago on some other blend of Death & Taxes and pinot noir grapes, so if you search online about it, you will get curious results.
I am glad you liked it so much, as I wanted to make a drinkable sour beer, instead of how most American sours remind me of the way some folks dare others to heat hot peppers."

It is a great beer. Kin of hard to categorize. I just checked and saw that it is listed as an ESB on here and I suppose that would be closest. Just a really solid drinking beer, as many Moonlight beers are. Maybe it isn't as widely produced as before. That used to be all over for years.

Moonlight is one of those breweries I really wish was distributed down in SoCal. Everytime I'm in the bay area, I make it a point to grab some. Can't wait for the taproom to open

I would appreciate them more if they sent stuff to SoCal...

Moonlight is great. Interesting styles and consistently good.

For some reason we've always had access to his beers here in Santa Cruz too which is nice.

Reality Czeck is by far the best Pilsner I've ever had. I was blown away.

I'm pretty sure Mr. Hunt is the only person who does deliveries. At least it seems that way! ...in addition to brewing and handling everything else. While I don't nearly get to hang out at a bar during the day and drink beer work from home as much as I once did I still recall a couple times over the span of a week or two where I saw him delivering kegs to at least three different places in SF and the East Bay. One of the nicest guys in a field full of nice guys (and gals).

Their current sour lager is called Just Enough Rope. It's still on tap at Nopalito, last I checked.

He has a helper now & isn't delivering as much himself. The only time I've been to Beachwood they had a Moonlight beer on, so it does get down there occasionally.
