first off - thank you to all of the brewers out there who are distributing in 500ml bottles...you've given us a great way to enjoy beer regularly w/o packing on too many extra pounds. anyone who consumes a craft brew routinely has probably run across the issue that a 750ml bottle is way too much for a worknight (alchohol and calories) and a bomber is likely still too much (especially since the alcohol levels appear to be on an endless rate of increase and most of the limited releases are in the >8% range) On the other end of the spectrum we have the underwhelming 12oz bottle which is just too small and often not the go-to format for a seasonal or limited release which my buying habits seem to prefer.

when will we start seeing 4 packs of 500's?

I would just as soon just get a 4 pack of 12 ozers, but call me crazy...

500ml=16.9 fl oz. Which is slightly above a pint. Most breweries that are doing this are charging as much as a bomber. So, no thanks, is the extra 6 oz really going to make that much of a difference on a school night? Not unless you are some kind of lightweight. I mean I can easily put down a DIPA bomber at 8-9% and not feel any ill effects the next day. Just saying. Seems like a way to cut the consumer out of a bit more product for the same amount of cash.

Yeah, most American brewers sell them for the price of a 4 pack. Not seeing the charm, saw the charm when I was getting great German beer for a buck a half liter back in the old country a mere ten years ago...

I agree to keep it to 12oz. I really don't even like the 22 bombers because I feel like their shorting 3oz from the 25oz wine bottle bombers (thanks Cigar City, the Bruery, NG, etc for your 25oz generosity)

It just leads me to make a $ per oz calculation that just get harder by the day to do in my 50+ yr old head. For me easy peasey; a 4 pack of Odell Myrcenary for $10 or whatever DIPA for $12 & 20 something less ounces. After a while I just feel like some of these brewers think we all just fell of the turnip truck...

To me, every size has its justifications.

750s are typically best shared (unless for the purpose of initial tasting and then to get buzzed, or to savor over a longer period of time, by oneself). 187s I find are for better, perhaps less easily acquired beer that you want to appreciate alone or with one other person. 375s are all over the map because they can vary so much stylistically and in terms of scarcity. 500s strike the nice balance between share and don't share - although I mostly savor one with a couple other folks who have not yet tried the beer at hand. And for some reason I tend to treat bombers in the same category as 500s, although this is likely more because the point of origin (most often USA) lends itself to commonality and thus ease of acquisition rather than quality and enjoyment factor of the beer.

Perhaps my feelings on size are begotten by my tendency to crack beer to share, unless it is ubiquitous.

I wish more limited or rare beers came in 12oz 4-packs, usually comes out to a much better deal $/oz compared to bombers.

I'm with you OP. For me the 500 is the perfect size bottle. I routinely put away bombers and/or 750s without any problem (except, as you mention, unwanted/unneeded calories), but I'd prefer it if I didn't have to. Then again, I don't usually drink the same beer more than once unless it's truly outstanding. I never really understood the concept of buying mostly 6-packs or cases.

Put anything in a bomber and it becomes premium or ultra premium. You end up paying way more per ounce versus buying it in 12oz form. $8 for a green flash road warrior bomber...get real!

Jack's Abby has been doing this since they started. Only recently did they start to incorporate sixers of 355ml/12oz bottles into their lineup, at the same time they expanded into upstate NY. I think it was mostly to be more accessible, so as not to require non-speciality retailers to create more/different shelf space, but I could be wrong.

Either way, I'm with ya. 500ml 4-packs are great packaging.

The Germans and Brits have been using this package size (16.9 oz) for a hell of a long time. Search out these beers. There are probably many 100s available.

Every single beer should be in a 12oz bottle. 4-packs or 6-packs. Yeah, I said it.

I can't think of one thing that recommends bombers/750s/etc. Quite frankly, as much as I love cans, I could do without the pints (Modern Times, Pizza Port, etc.). 12 ounces, kids. Perfect size. Let's do this.

500ml/16oz cans are the perfect size because its enough to be able to share but also just right to enjoy by yourself.
The problem with the pricing in the states is that basically if it doesnt come in a 4/6 pack IE sold individually, its deemed a special release or priced like it. But hey, look at Pliny. Individual 500ml bottle, sold for a reasonable price per ounce; locally at least.

In many parts of Europe, beer is bought by the bottle, big or small, not as part of a pack. So, for it to work stateside with a proper pricepoint, its gotta be in a pack, despite size of the bottle. Granted a four pack of bombers/750ml would make no sense/look ridiculous...

Beers intended tor age, age better in a larger format. Equally, beer stays fresher, longer, when in a larger format...
