I like 500mL bottles. They just seem perfect when I just want one beer. Not too big, not too small.

As a Brit, of course 500ml is the perfect size. Not far off the size of a pint in a pub. Often I'm found wanting more with the US 330ml bottles.. when you can't because you've only got the one bottle.

I have seen threads that in some way address bottle size many times on this site and the recurring sentiment seems to always go into how, in a dollars-per-ounce comparison, certain sizes are a "rip-off" or "bulls**t".
Different bottles serve different purposes. They are not only simply delivery methods for beer. You pay for those different purposes served by those different sizes. Like all products, some bottles are good buys, some not so good--when compared to other bottles of the same size! The beer should be on trial in a consumer's conscience, not the size. You don't buy a full size pick-up with a towing package and complain about poor gas mileage, except against other full size pick-ups. Don't need to haul stuff? After highest possible MPG? Then don't buy a full size pick-up.

I love the 500 ml size, especially for my Weihenstephaners. Comparing apples to apples however, meaning domestics with domestics, the 500 ml size does come with an unfortunate price increase for those extra 4ish ounces.

There has been some mention of Jack's Abby in this thread, to my knowledge, they are no longer selling 4-packs in this format. Could be wrong, but I think they referenced cost when making the decision to change packaging format. I think they use it only for singles. It's been a while since I've seen the 4-pack format in 500 ml sizes.

great argument, except why does the bomber have to cost more per oz. To make more profit pure and simple. I can dig the bomber to try argument, but lets agree that the price should be in line with what a 6 pack would go for, then they would sell more.

The 500 ml should be the staple size for Oktoberfests. It perfectly fills my 1/2 liter mug.

Right, I don't see JA 4 packs of 500ML anymore. But they do sell several single 500ML at $4. Maine Brewing makes several beers I love, but the cheapest is $7 for 500ML. I'm really not loving that price. Don't see any other local breweries using this format, and I wonder if JA will stick with it.

I don't know the definitive answer to that, but I think maybe the price differential is due to the "convenience" of not having to buy six bottles of a beer you're not sure you're going to want. It's a bigger bottle, but it's still a single; and single items are almost always more expensive (per ounce, per pound etc.) than when you buy in bulk. For the brewery it's a way to get more different products to the consumer while occupying less shelf space (which is also to the consumer's advantage), but that comes at the premium of a higher price per ounce. In other words, they charge more because they can. Just my theory.

Prairie does a few in smaller bottles, including Bomb! More annoyed at limited release 3L bottles.

I'm actually ok with the Noirs and other "special" releases being in 12oz singles. It allows more people to acquire them when they get released and when I go to drink them I don't have to commit to a bomber. I can enjoy a glass by myself if wanted. What annoys me are the regular line up beers like Prairie Hop and Ale ect that could be in 4 packs for $10 yet they put them into 500ml for the same price. Why is Birra and Standard in 4 packs when Hop and Ale are 500s? That's my point.
