So I read the most bitter IPA thread and I assumed palate wrecker was going to be a safe choice. I just recently got into IPAs and have been looking for something bitter. So far Ruination has been the best thing I've had. A good amount of bitter and taste, but ideally I'd want something about twice as bitter. I picked up a fresh Palate Wrecker 4 pack today and it was definitely disappointing compared to the hype. I would rank it as a mid-bitter IPA at best. I could easily drink the 4-pack - less bitter than ruination.

Is there a decently available 4-6 pack that would put Palate Wrecker to shame and taste good? I found a Mikkeller 1000 ibu bomber for $8-9, but would rather have a 4-6 pack. Plus I didn't read great things about the taste of it. I'd like to try Hoptimum but haven't found it yet.

Try Moylan's Hopsickle. I enjoy hoppy beers but this one was over-the-top even for me.

How exactly would you know if you were tasting something "twice as bitter" as Ruination?

Well, just subjectively trying to describe it. I would say ruination was what I would hope an average IPA to be. So between a generic lager to ruination, I'd like that gap again. Something that would make you pause between sips but still taste good, rather than something easy to just keep drinking. Like New Belgium La Folie. I haven't had it in a while, but it's sour enough that you'd pause between sips, but in a good way.

I found a place that has Hopsickle and Hoptimum bombers for $10. I may try that.

Huma Lupa Licious by Short's Brewing is about 140 IBU, if you can trade for it.

That was the first beer that popped into my head. Biggest bitter hop bomb I've ever had. I very much enjoy it though.

First you should understand IBU's which palate wrecker has a lot of (more than a human can precieve which is about 100) IBU's are also relative to the beer. Great divide yeti imperial stout and Pliny the elder have the same ibu's (around 70-75) yet Pliny is noticeably more bitter and while yeti is hoppy for a stout its nothing like an ipa.

To make beer more bitter you can't just add more hops. Imagine something like Schlitz at 70-80 ibus you would have a very very bitter beer. Likely too bitter to tolerate unless you just enjoy being uncomfortable.

One word.... Abrasive. It was one of the most bitter DIPAs I've had in a long time.

I haven't had it for a while now but I recall Hop Stoopid from Lagunitas being pretty up there in bitterness.

I thoroughly enjoyed my last Palate Wrecker. Now Greenbush Brother Benjamin on the other hand...I love the bitter bombs, but for me this one was a mess on the palate which I contributed most of that to the insane bitterness.

    According to them, 114 IBU

I may be a bit off here, but I generally find single IPAs to be much more bitter than their double, or sometimes triple, stablemates.

+1 on the Moylan's Hopsickle. Fantastically bitter, and for some reason, a beer that doesn't seem to get mentioned all that often.

I second both Hopsickle and Hop Stoopid. Both are great and super hoppy!

Hop Stoopid. Sierra Nevada Hoptimum. You can have a ipa though low in IBU and still have a bitter bite.I was the same way when plowing through ipa's. I'm drinking this week some weyerbacher (spelling? ) last chance ipa. Very bitter bite and lower ibus. Keep in mind your pallete and how your pallete percives IBU change as the more you try different beers.

Hopsickle so far is the only beer mentioned to fit OP's request. If Ruination is not bitter enough Hopsickle will do the trick. If Hopsickle isn't bitter enough, go to your local homebrew store, buy some Warrior hops, put a cone or pellet in your mouth, and chew it as you sip some Hopsickle. If that doesn't do it you are not human.

I haven't had Resin in a couple of years but I do remember it being one of the most bitter IPAs I've had, and I know I've had Palate Wrecker and I think I've had Hopsickle and Ruination.
