Boulevard's new offering, 'The Calling' Imperial IPA, is a bitter bomb. Made Stone's Enjoy By taste like a balanced DIPA when I had that afterwards. Only 75 IBU but has 8 different hops in it.

Yeah I don't know...when I taste Palate Wrecker, I get more sweetness than bitter. Someone mentioned something like Palate Wrecker may have more sugar content, so perhaps there is something to that. While I don't find Palate Wrecker bitter at all, I find something like Lagunitas Maximus or Hop Stoopid extremely bitter.

This. I've found that some of the newer session IPAs like Lagunitas Daytime and Founders All Day IPA actually have more perceptible bitterness than many double IPA, which while very hoppy, are not really very bitter.

Completely agree. Hoppy does not necessarily mean bitter. Enjoy By (my all time favorite IPA) is extremely hoppy, but I don't consider it bitter at all.

Gotta second Sierra Nevada's Hoptimum. That one was shockingly hoppy last year on draught. I still think Palate Wrecker is hoppier/ much more bitter.

Riiiight - what he ^ said :sunglasses:

I don't know the deets either, but we have a ceiling for perceiving bitterness, IBUs do not translate cleanly into your perception of bitterness, and not mentioned by @cavedave but also important to bear in mind is that no two people are the same - a numbingly bitter beer to one person may be an afterthought to someone else.

That said, I think that most of the beers mentioned are good representatives of big bitter beers, but take it all with a grain of salt... which is no doubt measured in some form of salinity unit, and which we no doubt have a threshold for, and which no one's going to agree on anyway... :stuck_out_tongue:

    Cheers

Hoppin Frog Mean Manalishi Double IPA. Completely unbalanced and not a very pleasant experience for me. And I LOVE hops.

I would honestly (and politely) disagree with this. It is Abrasive, however I feel something Ruination has a lot more bittering hops which makes it the more agressive beer. However, Abrasive Ale is also 10X better in my opinion.

I prefer Abrasive over Ruination anyday. The last few times I've had Ruination though, it didn't seem as bitter as I remembered. Lupulin Shift might've been the culprit, yet when I drank Abrasive fresh I perceived a more lingering bitterness to it.

I recall Nelson being very bitter (but still really good), then again we were a few beers in at that point.
