The funniest part about the “there are so many better beers out there” argument is, they can never actually name anything better that is easy to get.

Yes, more is not the best brewery in the country, but I also don’t have to leave the state to get their beer or trad with someone online.

The real reason most people complain is because they want the beer but don’t want to wait, which is fine, just don’t try to rationalize it like babies

Might be the most rational thing I've read on this whole site in the past couple of days.

Also, for the record...I have no problem with how someone spends there free time, and no one should feel bad about doing what they want to do if it hurts no one else.

I probably play devil's advocate simply because I agree with you more than anything. I'm not an internet tough guy!

For the most part I agree with you. But there have been many times I’ve chased a hyped Chicago pale ale/DIPA and after tasting it went “Damn, I should’ve bought Lizard King/NvU” (looking at you Hop Butcher). Those beers are where the bar is for me. Have been for awhile and probably will be for some time.

Where's my beer? And the receipt! I'm not increasing your allowance by paying your beer markups.
And you forgot to close the garage door, again. Doofus! Kelsie and your mother had to chase Brutus down the street in this frozen weather. I should have called animal control on that stupid duck when I had the chance.

Oh yeah, fill up the tank when you take the car or I swear you'll never drive again!!!

Well as long as you didn’t wait in line for anything while you were there you should be good

Exactly my thought. Every time I read “you dummies, there’s equally better beer sitting on the shelf,” there’s never any beer actually named. Also, for the record, even if hypothetically there was, it was likely canned 2 months ago not 2 days ago like the beer you’re waiting in line for.

    Oh, I want to play!

“Hype” is the distortion of rational thinking, especially in crowds, that causes people to inflate the collective perceived value of a good so that demand increases sharply.

Because supply is perceived to be low and the product isn’t priced high enough, consumers are actually working against each other to make the product harder to get. It’s less that people are waiting in line - it’s more the people waiting in line for hours more than they needed to be there to get the product. Can’t blame them, because they didn’t know when the cutoff would be. If they really wanted the beer, they had to do that.

Hype further translates to the market of these products being non-local, which dramatically increases demand. When internet peoples post on instacarts (sic), saying “I’ll trade you three quarters a vial of Pliny’s younger cousin for a can of vanilla whatever!,” then we have firmly landed into speculative territory. People are buying beers because they’re probably going to be good, and they might be GREAT.

The argument that there is plenty of amazing beer on the shelves is easy to prove - the whales of yesterday are here in droves today. Toppling Goliath (and in cans!), BA ten fiddy, Sump, Madagascar - all these beers were (and still are?) the benchmark. What they aren’t is a new tick. The hype machine is frequently driven by novelty factor. The breweries are cranking out forever new beers to drive more speculation, instead of making a really good standard-bearer (e.g. lizard king). Not good or bad, but the model causes people to behave irrationally.

And that’s why we talk about it. This is the marketplace of ideas, trying to sort out irrational behavior. Why do they do it? Is it good or bad? Do brewers do it on purpose? How do they get it to stop? Are we calling it out because we’re sad we didn’t get some, or because we think it makes our scene look sad?

And lounging around, drinking beer at 9a in a public space is kinda weird. If a group of people did that where I lived, I would be really mad. There’s one dude who does it all the time, but he’s ok.

Maybe @Beer_Economicus can throw in some supply / demand curves for fun.

But the styles of what is available now are completely different than what people are waiting in line to buy. Nobody is standing in line for 4 hours to get a west coast IPA.

You are right though. A lot of it is somewhat artificial demand we are creating, but it's not as simple as "just buy a daisy cutter instead! It's just as good!"

The line drinking I can live with or without. Did I partake this Saturday? Yeah, but I didn’t have anywhere to be and people around me were opening some really cool stuff. Do I partake every time? Absolutely not.

I have seen many times where line drinkers are obnoxious, messy, and urinating everywhere, which is unacceptable. But there are other times, where breweries condone it, porta potties are provided, people are generally respectful of the neighborhood, and they clean up their shit. This particular line share, was mostly the latter.

If More came out and said no line drinking, I’d be fine with it. Doesn’t really matter to me.

Couldn't have said it any better. Hype is very much a real thing. I dunno how anyone could deny that unless they just aren't completely immersed in the beer game and if that's the case, what even is your life, bro?

Oh shit. Hitchcock had it wrong. It's not the birds that will end us, it's the whales! I should have known, those sneaky mammals pretending like they're fish. Maybe we can get Dory to talk some sense into them.

While I agree that most people in line are there to drink the beer, I wonder if you guys are on FB or not. The number of people flipping beers in any of the easy to join Chicago FB groups is pretty prominent, and then if you start thinking about the "closed" or "secret" groups where razzles are occurring...there is a lot of flipping going on. And I have definitely seen instances of someone selling in order to fund some sort of bill.

I'll also throw in "supporting a local brewer" or "MORE fanboy" as an excuse to line-up. I know back in the day, any time FFF had a BA bottle release I'd get excited...and they were probably batting only .500 on those but, they were aside from GI, really the only local brewer putting out BA stuff. I get it if you are a MORE local or Shaun fan but, yeah, I am not driving to the burbs' or standing in line in the cold for a chance to obtain something that at best is going to be incrementally better than other great options available. On the other hand, if this was a fest and I could stand around drinking good beer all day in the cold with friends, lining up for the beer becomes a non-issue.
