Don't worry, you're not alone. I also can't understand the hype behind a non BA stout. I have some bitter sensitivity that prevents me from tasting many of the profiles in stouts that others are able to taste (or claim to be able to taste :stuck_out_tongue:), but that said, I also don't like a lot of the flavors that others seem to. I don't like chocolate milk in general, and I have yet to enjoy a stout with a "chocolate milk" flavor. Or anything that is "straight coco". I did recently have a Willet Mexican Cake. The barrel was hardly noticeable, but the cinnamon was great. Probably the best "non BA stout" I have had. (I said non BA because I could not detect the bourbon). Great for what it was, but not near amazing BA stouts in terms of enjoyment.

Welp, it's official - your palate is dead. I'm not looking to give up any of my regular Abraxas, but if you can't tell the difference between regular Abraxas and Barrel Aged Abraxas..........I don't know what to tell you. They're both good! The most recent batch of regular Abraxas was one of the better batches, I grant you, but it's still nothing close to the density and deliciousness of BAA.

My apologies to the More, MoRE, MoRe homies for thread-jacking...I was just trying to comp regular and BA releases and what that might mean for the BA Henna coming up. Cheers, all.

What I feel like I just read is "If abraxas is OK and BA abraxas is the bomb-diggity, and people go ape-shit over henna, then BA henna is going to be the orgasm of the beer world." That seems to be what the trade offers are believing.

If anyone reading this pre-trades on big bottles, I am exceptionally curious to hear your thoughts on why trade for a bottle before any reviews are in. Expectations are clearly high. Am I just exceedingly more risk averse than y'all? Seems like a big gamble to throw out BAA and 1.5BAA for a bottle before anyone has any idea of the quality.

I've had BA Abraxas once and I prefer the non-BA version to the BA version. So hows that? :stuck_out_tongue:

This made me literally laugh aloud at my desk - thanks. :joy:

It's possible that a correlation or expectation exists, yes!!! Sweet baby, Jesus, @Beer_Economicus you are so right on this. Risk aversion is the name of the game. As I have mentioned to dear friends attempting to land these BA Henna beers - what are the chances that this is THE BEST BEER YOU'VE EVER HAD!?!? That's what it needs to be, or close to it, if you're trading off BAA and KBBS left and right. I'm not saying it can't be, but let's run the statistical analysis. Looking for the Baseball Reference equivalent for beer...

And holy hell, @FBarber ...you like regular better than BAA? That's really awesome - doesn't cost as much to get your fave on.

I'm with @FBarber on this one. I had BAA once thanks to a generous person on this forum, and I noticed it not having much barrel and not being much different than regular Abraxas. I was not the only one tasting it to make that comment either.

Why though? What if you had 3 bottles of BAA, thought it was a great beer, but really wanted to try something new? You are most definitely welcome to your opinion but I'm sure there are plenty of people out there who believe there can be, and are, better beers than BAA and KBBS.

Do you never trade for a beer you haven't had before? There's never any guarantee that a new beer is going to taste better than the beer you are giving up to trade for it.

Of the few "whalez" I've had, only a handful was I like, damn. To me, no beer is worth this pre trade insanity. I guess my FOMO meter has dwindled with my old age. I only get a chub for barrel aged, fruited saisons and Cory King nowadays.

Reading too much into my general commentary and I’m trying to be succinct in my answers - which is leaving gaps in what you/others may be reading into.

I’m definitely not against the tick, and of course trading great beer for great beer is the number one reason I’m on here - but the pre-trade hype is exactly what I’m referencing. I’m guilty of it, too, but very very rarely does pre-trading for a big release, no disputing that’s what this BA Henna set is, is probably going to disappoint based on what one would have to give up. All good if someone wants to do that, truly.

Totally fair. I have never and have no plans to ever pre-trade for anything, so I am 100% with you on that point.

Did not expect to be discussing the value of these in BAA units.

This. I thought BA Abraxas was delicious, no doubt. But I didn't think there was much barrel, and all the pastry ingredients that make regular Abraxas so amazing were slightly muted in the barrel version (which is to be expected, given the aging time).

What's more, I think the vicosity of the two is pretty similar, but if I had to pick one over the other as being thicker, I'd choose regular Abraxas. Which is also to be expected, given that barrel-aging tends to thin out the body of a beer.

Lol - let’s return to a More topic, people!!!

Any word on how long BA Henna has been aged? Type of barrel?
