Long Trail > Schilling > Central Mass doesn’t make a ton of sense. You’d be adding a solid 2.5-3 hour total detour heading back north to Schilling.

If you’re set on Long Trail and the timing works, check out River Roost in White River Junction. Shares a parking lot with Big Fatty’s awesome tap list and good BBQ.

Agree 100% here. I also advise leaving Burlington to travel down to Fiddlehead given the wide availability in/around town.

Will be interesting to get the recap of this trip and/or details as it unfolds.

yeah, I'm looking at it more... reality is that I can't make that all work... long trail to schilling i didn't quite realize was 2 hours up the road...

I'm going to have to lose one of those and i think it will be schilling because I cant front load it to tomorrow without other problems

Today would have needed a mythical jump and that didn't happen with late night broom hockey. Bad enough I lost a full hour going around NYC

FWIW Schilling is well distributed in MA, you'll probably find it around central MA.

If by central MA you mean Worcester or the area, Armsby Abbey is worth the trip.

central mass means christmas... central mass means mom and dad. never made armsby may not on this trip. Schilling distributes in Virginia.

Hill... was fun to get in the 2-3 inches of snow. But I made it. Met expectations and the weather and it being Thursday held off some of the visitors so I got to talk to the bartenders and staff a bit.

Lost Nation... they're having some rough times but I was talking to them and they're trying to give it a good try. The main thing seems to be that they're trying to be more of a community space. I should have asked for a look around but it sounds like they want to be more of a taproom than a distributing operation and a focal point for Morrisville. I wish them good luck. Scuttlebutt is that somebody in town complained about a mural painted on site because it was too big... people need to find better things to do.

Rock Art Brewing... OMG PUPPIES. Beer was ok, I was hoping for better. The people were nice, I assume I was talking to the owners. Groused about canning Vermonster in 8 oz cans... that's not happening but I mentioned I saw that somebody else was doing 8 oz cans for their barleywine... saw it on reddit.

freak folk... solid beer but I'm not a NEIPA guy. Nice little space, didn't blow me away but I went to hill so its hard at that point.

Blackback... food was solid but I wish they had more options I was into food wise. Beer list was crazy.

Cabot cheddar... *drool* shame I can't take it with me. They had a sample of 10 yr... sharpness nirvana.

Alchemist. Met expectations. Wish it wasn't full pours. Heady, El Hefe, Donovan's Red. Bought some heady per request and focal for myself to have some other time soon.

Started to snow... not a major plot point.

Von Trapp hit some selections... helles, trosten, czech dark, fresh hop. Trosten and fresh hop were the winners. Almost bought a goat doll because it looked at me with its big eyes. Bought a medium sized glass boot. First glass boot to my name.

Idletyme. Wasn't great. Chicken caesar with anchovies?? I survived that. ESB was the winner. Had flavor to it. Making me wonder if we can't NEIPA a more malt forward offering... hear me out... similar ideas but say like a quarter of the hops?

Pro pig. Kinda beered out by then. Had their winter lager which was labeled a schwarzbeer... seemed correct.

Snow was persistent through the day. Slipped once on the way back to the overnight stopped. So it goes. I thought my balance would do better than that.

    My list, in ranked order:

Hill Farmstead (somewhat a shrine - note all the RateBeer blue ribbons…)
Lawson’s (best brewpub, really good beer, note all the plaques on the way to the restrooms)
    Alchemist
    Foam (good beer, nice location)
    Fiddlehead (good beer, mediocre brewpub)
    Frost
River Roost (had good BA Imperial Stouts and Barley Wines last time I was there)
Burlington Beer Company (great space, large selection of OK beers)

Blackback has the best beer list.

    couple of days behind...

Lawsons... scrag was pretty good, backyard red was pretty good, mad river and fayson was kind of forgettable. mogul masher, i think, worked pretty good.

fiddlehead... omg pizza... IPA, double IPA... solid, white, acceptable, porter, solid. merch, wonderful.

four quarters. lots of solid offerings. light offers were weirdly cloying but the belgian quad was on point and the more explicit holiday ale was well rounded.

slipped onto jps for karaoke, what a strange scene.

other notes: crossed the ap gap in the snow... what a very very stupid mistake. no car damage. no tows.

What's the consensus on Foam these days? I used to try and never miss a Dot release but since they started distro I feel like I've dumped more cans than I've finished

I am not a Foam beer fan. I am a Foam vibes fan (the brewery and the lake always lend to a good hang). The beers, besides the Dot series, has always been lackluster to bad to me. So I ask from that lens - they've gotten worse???

    Sunday

Started at Al's french fry... alright... went there again on monday. Servicable. Nice prices.

Foam was alright, not my type of beers.

Queen City stole the show. Stein beer... yes hot rocks. Not on tap but really is the point to brink a steinbeer? No, its to watch it get done. I have a video, I will not post it. OK on the overall, liked the vibe and was more my kind of people. The Old Monty was tasty. The hefe needs work in a serious way.

Zero gravity... first beer I had was really good, the spiced dubbel. Didn't do much here.

Switchback had a couple of interesting options but nothing that impressive.

BBCO by then I was just kind of beer'd out. Nothing too thrilling but I was done.

    ----

Don't know if I'll do another trip like this for quite awhile. Kinda don't want to. It does take a bit out of you. I'd love another asheville trip after recovery and I'd love in a perfect world to do a "north of san francisco" run.

I hit Long Trail on Monday, it was good but its clear they're running on legacy. I guilted myself into going to Harpoon VT... last time I went they had some great stuff on... this time... man once you get big enough and your mains get old and leave the business places just sometimes lose the plot. I don't know. Long Trail wasn't fully disappointing but the Harpoon stop kind of tinted my thoughts on the subject.

Stopped at beverage warehouse beforehand, picked up another couple of small items. Hindsight wish i had brought slightly more shareables in the sense that I think I have everything mostly dedicated for specific people but not much more. a four pack here or there. i'm still in central mass and I still have Navigation Milk Stout on the mind and possibly and Idle Hands stop.

    So that's where I am.

I remember when they first opened I was really into a few of their ipa's. I put them up there with Trillium etc. They also had a single foeder back then that would pump out ridiculous stuff. Bubbles and Ghost were two absolute knockouts, so much so that I memorialized one as our token cooking olive oil bottle. probably the last bottle of this in existence

This was all before they started canning

Glad to see on this thread appreciating Fiddlehead.
Just a 5 min. Drive from my house and always good IPAs, though not a great selection.

Plenty of appreciation for Fiddlehead from this guy. The IPA is always in my rotation. I just don't see the need for most people to make the 45+ minute drive round trip (without traffic) to Shelburne once they are in Burlington. As both you and @Patrick_in_DC noted, good IPAs but not a wide ranging selection in the tap room and the tap room itself is near the bottom of the list for me in the area. Fiddlehead IPA is readily available on tap in Burlington and you can usually find other taps around the area as well.

taproom isn't bad, a bit disorganized. Yes, selection could be better. So I'd assume its coasting on reputation but great merch selection.

I agree the taproom is pretty disappointing and he rarely has new beers. It’s only 2 miles away and I used to go often, but I had complaints and conflicts…

I think he is really focusing on shipping beer. This is now the biggest Vermont owned brewery (Harpoon/Long Trail/Otter Creek/Shed/Wolavers is based on Boston).

I still think Second Fiddle is on of the best IPAs from Bermont.
