Excavating my storage unit and finding my old hat/cap collection, I unearthed a cap from Privatbrauerie Moritz Fiege. Given to me by an old friend from Munich who grew up near Bochum and called this his favorite brewery in Germany.

I've never had the good opportunity to try this beer, pretty sure it's distribution radius is pretty short. Can anyone who's had their beer give me some perspective on them? Based on their website they look to be one of those small, independent German breweries with a lot of history and I'd love to try their products some time.

Wow. Guess it's too small for comment.

Never had anything from them, distribution does indeed appear to be local. And I've never been to Bochum.

For some reason, I think I've seen their Pils over here in the U.S., but it may have been many years ago.

I haven't even seen their beers in my area of Germany...

Yes, i had their beers several times..
It's not a really small operation, their beers are rather common in the Ruhrgebiet.
I loved them early on because, way before the term "craft beer" reached germany and brewers were making more diverse beers, they stuck out to me by making an amber beer, Schwarzbier and still making good Export..
Their Pils used to be really good, relatively strong hop presence, but I didn't have it for a really long time now.

Somehow i always compared them to Schwelmer Brauerei from Wuppertal, not too far away, who also made more diverse styles than usual at the time.
Sadly, Schwelmer is no more, so we should be happy that Fiege is still around and still seems to be doing fine.

I had their Gründer Dortmunder/Export in '17 and wouldn't bother with it again.

I had the Bernstein in 2015 and the Pils in 2011. Didn't rate either, nor do I recall how they were.

    Perhaps Erzengel can chime in.

    Hey @steveh
I'm living in Bochum and I love Fiege beers  I think they're brewing one of the best Pils in Germany but you might remember that I'm not an expert.

If you're crazy enough to pay for the shipping, I'd be honored to send you beers from Fiege @steveh

    @Snowcrash000 @Sigmund @Lurchus
If I can help you getting Fiege beers, just let me know  I'd love to read what you think about those.

I'm gonna see if I can find any of their stuff in one of the bigger Getränkemarkts a little further out. Never noticed anything from them so far though.

Crazy is right, these days, but I appreciate the offer!

It just adds another location to the agenda of my next trip to the old country.

    Over there, or exported here?

Maybe, like I feel about Dinkelacker, they don't transport well or Pasteurization brings it down?

If you are still in cologne: trinkgut used to have several ruhrpott beers,,ncluding fiege somemtimes. there is one in frechen.also the place closest to cologne where you could get some of the better düsseldorf alts, dont know if it is still this way though.

I think i will have one or two this summer when i make it to the ruhrgebiet, thanks to the Deutschlandticket:wink:

Yeah, I'll try Trinkgut. They have a pretty good Alt selection these days as well, by the way. Pretty much the only Getränkemarkt in all of Cologne that sells them.

Gründer was from a bottle while in Brussels, the other two I brought home with me from Germany and drank at home.

I was last in Bochum in 2019 before the pandemic and drank their beers at the brewery tap. They are good but perhaps not quite good enough to be worth hunting down from the other side of the Atlantic. I was a little disappointed by the hop aroma of the Pils, I was expecting outstanding but just good.

The Helles in his last shot has me thirsting for some lighter lagers after all the Märzen that has been crossing my palate. Note the great, sticky a resilient head (if not the culinary accompaniment ).

Just noticed the tagline on that wall advertisement, "Miteinander. Mit Fiege."

    I'll drink to that.
