I have enjoyed the tap version just fine and don't find it to be thin. Can't speak on the cans. More importantly has anyone heard when the taproom is opening? Last I checked the website makes no mention and has no update. A little frustrating as the original opening was communicated as fall 2012, then January 2013 etc. etc.
Which Morning Wood Stout are you referring to? There are 3 brewed in the Midwest that I can think of. One by Big Wood from Minnesota, one by Odd Ales from Michigan and one by CIB from Iowa. Only ever had the Morning Wood Stout from CIB, but it is truly one of the worst beers I've ever had, unfortunately.
Not a very pleasant offering, IMO (I talking about the one from Big Wood). I didn't think it tasted like a black ale though. I'm just not a big fan of thinner stouts, with maybe Left Hand Milk Stout being an exception. And this one is way too thin for me. I threw one of these in as an extra, before trying it myself. I tried to apologize to my trade partner, but luckily for me he actually liked it. Go figure.
Had it in cans and on tap and agree with the thin sentiment. For me it falls unfavorably between FBS/Peruvian (for a richer coffee stout) and Coffee Bender (for a thinner coffee-heavy beer).
Well in fairness it is meant to be a sessionable stout for whatever that is worth to people. I think they nailed that to description. But as far as a flavorful beer for the price...
It's not a life-changer by any means, but for what it's meant to be it's solid. Jason gave me a couple of sample cans of Bad Axe, and that is pretty damn tasty.
I think it is more accurately a coffee Ale -so like a black ale as you suggest. That's why I love it though, mimics the mouthfeel of coffee, but still has roasted notes. Great beer. *I am assuming you are referring to Big Wood Breweries version. Ironic thing is, I have CIB's in my fridge too. I should do a side-by-side.
