I don't care enough about anybody to sit in much of a line anymore (I did Mortalis because I spend a few weeks every summer right in that area and had an afternoon to kill anyhow) given what we have available in NY, but I do think Mortalis is making better beer than almost any other brewery I've ever had and that their hype, unlike most, is 1000% deserved.

I have been drinking 20 years now and my whole perception of what beer could even be changed when I tried Mortalis the first time; I've never had a Hydra that wasn't excellent. That Chimera Fruit Salad that was somewhat recently was excellent as well. Flawless execution. Next time I am in the area I need to grab one of their stouts.

Mortalis is one of the few breweries I would take a beercation to. Not to mention it gives me an excuse to buy a couple garbage plates while in that general vicinity.

I went to college in Rochester. I don't miss much about the area, but I have a lot of fond memories of late nights at Nick Tahoes. Also Jay's Diner. Unfortunately it's been many years since I had a college kid metabolism.

Hydras are Mortalis's fruited berliners. If you've ever had a Burley Oak JREAM or an Imprint Schmoojee, it's basically like that.

If you have no clue what I'm talking about, they're basically really thick and sweet beers with a ton of fruit in them.

Here’s a controversial point of view. Really thick and sweet “beers” with a ton of fruit. Ew. What’s the point?

There not overly sweet as some fruited sours tend to be. Honestly they're perfectly balanced imo

I feel the same way about wine. It's grapes that old people crush with their feet but people pay hundreds to thousands of dollars for a bottle

If people want yogurt in their beer let them have it. If it provides jobs and gets a community together to enjoy it, hell I'll try it

Everyone should feel free to be a purist if you wanna. But it turns out—even though these beers don’t pair with a lengthy tradition—that they’re quite delicious.

Exactly they're not the first to brew the style but are one of the best at doing it. Hell maybe the best at the style

Im not a big wine fan. Maybe 2 or 3 times a year tops, and it’s usually when I’m out with the wife.

I’m definitely guilty of drinking some IPAs that have a juice-like taste and some stouts that have more than a few adjuncts but, for the most part, I like beer.

I have tried pretty much all the hype smoothie sour places (Answer, Imprint, 450)

Out of all those beers Hydra is the only one that never disappointed me a single time. Every single one I have tried has been amazing. I can't think of any other brewery I can say that about. Some are sweeter than others but overall Hydras seem to have an almost perfect balance.

    Just my $.02

I compare these types of “beers” and sours to the band, Rush. I hate Rush. I can’t stand Rush. But...they have 2 musicians in their band who are generally considered masters of their instrument and they’ve sold tens of millions of records. They’re obviously popular for a reason...a reason I just don’t agree with/jive with.

I understand a lot of these beers have very high ratings on here and breweries like this one sell out in a few hours...I just don’t like ‘em. And, I’ve tried enough that I know that.

hopefully I didn’t give the impression that I was against jobs/community by implying I was against yogurt in beer...

Look man as we both well know, there is constant vying for puristboi points on here. But this genuinely is not that. I usually tend towards the live and let live end of the spectrum, with some slight have-your-cake-and-eat-it puristboi overtones, but pulp in beer sounds like an overstep to me; as do many other things in beer these days. Like I mean - I just drank a gin and tonic, and ate some soup dumplings. Did that taste good? Yes. Am I slightly buzzed? Yes. Did I just drink beer? No.

The one thing I will say about Mortalis "beers" is that I generally enjoy them one at a time. Maybe for breakfast, lunch, and dinner stretched out over the day. Sadly these beers aren't very good for getting me drunk because there is so much fruit in there my stomach can't handle the amount it makes me to get a good buzz.

I’ve always maintained that analogies - without exception - never work on BA. But damn this is the first and only legit one I’ve ever seen.
