Just had my first Mosaic single hopped beer - Outbreak IIPA from Backlash Brewing here in Mass. Delicious beer that really showcases the unique flavor of the Mosaic hop. Was struggling to pinpoint what exactly it was in the flavor/aroma that contributed to its unique character. Are there any specific characteristics you folks get from Mosaic that stand out from other varieties? Just curious.

Yeah, papaya. In the nose, certainly.

Mosaic's a neat hop. I haven't brewed with it so I can't say whether or not it has some magical, alluring property from a brewer's perspective, but it certainly tastes and smells nice enough. That said, there are lots of hops that smell and taste nice enough, and like most of them I think it'll peak in popularity before some other hop(s) come out that steal the spotlight for a while. But hey, I'm not complaining.

Papaya and almost a pineapple or pear juice quality by my nose/tastebuds.

New Belgiums Accumulation IMO is a great cheap mosaic-forward (white) IPA. Almost too easy drinking from the light body and such bright hops, so don't say I didn't warn you :stuck_out_tongue:

Yup, tropical fruit. Great hop that was born from Simcoe if I'm correct.

Very very tropical. Almost used them in an IPA today, but went with Amarillo instead. Now I have to decide what to use them for next time. Hmmm....

Blueberry. Wow. That's totally what I was looking for. Definitely agree on the tropical fruit/pineapple/papaya fronts as well. Need to find more Mosaic driven beers! Cheers

I have read many folks mention blueberry wrt Mosiac. I personally have not perceived blueberry in the homebrewed beers solely hopped with Mosaic. Maybe my palate perceives more of a tropical fruit flavor?

    Cheers!

I get peaches and blueberries in some beers and then grassy tropical fruit in others.

Mosaic has a little bit of everything that you get from the American hop varieties, hence the name. But there is definitely a prominent tropical fruit flavor, and I agree with blueberry as well.

Toppling Goliath Sosus is the best mosaic hop beer that I've had.

I agree on the blueberry. I find that this hop can also get a little aggressive on the green vegetal flavors if used too lavishly but the blueberry flavor is certainly unique.

I too have heard rumblings about Sosus - I need to find some Iowans to trade with

Any examples you'd care to share? I really enjoy the super green flavors, reminds me of wet hopped beers.

Definitely blueberry and lemon. I also get that in the aroma.

Yea, I'd kill to get my hands another bottle of that. But alas, TG is so far from me.

Their Pseudosue is an incredile single hop beer as well.

I like these flavors too if I'm in the mood ... I have tried two homebrew examples of single-hopped IPAs with Mosaic. There's a single-hop IPA called Phillips Kaleidoscope that I've had as well that captures the flavor profile really well, blueberry, tropical, and green flavors. Its from British Columbia Canada though. Not sure if it reaches your neck of the woods.

Appears I'm the only one so far, but I always pick up smarties... the white ones.

Edit: I just googled "smarties flavors" and white is orange cream. And there you have it.

    @Calg
Heh, I'm sure you're right. A local (St. Louis, MO) "4 Hands" brewed a Mosaic heavy IPA "Resurrection" this past August, and while it was pretty vegetal and kind of catty/musty, I loved it. And while I love the tropical flavors, I would usually rather have some green, or piney flavors to balance it out. I'm the same way with the super citusy Centennial hopped beers and Galaxy/aussie hopped beers, too. While I enjoy them and crave them once in a while, I'm reaching for a piney green IPA more frequently

Totally man. Some of the west coast IPAs from near here get all kinds of green onion and woody flavors going on. Adds some interest in moderation. Or you get the tropical fruit bowl effect. The best have citrus, tropical, and pine all coexisting in harmony.
