so this is a general question but I wanted to see what people thought the most convincing American Hops Quad/Belgian Style strong Dark ale was, I’ve never found one that came even close to the most lackluster Belgian so I’m interested to see what I’ve been missing out on.

Weyerbacher quad might not be the *best but it never disappoints.

Wow you didn't even like Cuvee' Van DeKeizer Blauw, good luck finding an American version that is as good, let alone much better, than that.

Boulevard Sixth Glass for the Quad. Ommegang Adoration (if you can find it) for the Strong Dark. IMO.

for the quad Southampton Abbot 12.

but Midnight Sun Venus and Odonata Rorie's were the best domestics I've tried and both in my top 5 quads overall.

I've always thought Ommegang Three Philosophers comes pretty close.

The Sixth Glass and Bourbon Barrel Quad jump out. Both are Boulevards.

Nice! We already have suggestions for a fruited version and a BA version. I would've put the over/under at 10 posts, so good job :sunglasses:.

Sly Fox Ichor seems to be based on that one. It certainly has the sweetness and grape soda esters; but both need a couple years to mellow out, imo.

I too like Sixth Glass and Weyerbacjer quad, but Russian River Salvation is probably the best BSDA I've had. DFH Raison D'Extra also lands at the top of the list, especially with some age.

It turns out that most if not all of the American made quads I've had were aged in bourbon barrels. I assume you're only interested in non BA stuff. If I'm wrong then my list will be longer.

@FatBoyGotSwagger I'm with fatboy, weyerbacher quad while maybe not the best is definitely worth a try. I have a few in my fridge now

I'm a novice on dark Belgians but in my limited experience I've found that the American versions tend to double down on that yeasty flavor and I'm unfortunately not a fan of that character.

I absolutely love St. Berdardus and Trappist Rochefort's dark ales, but I've found the Ommegang and especially Boulevard versions have too much of that spicy yeast note for my liking.

Being outside Unibroue's distribution area (I know, but it's in North America) I have to settle for St. Bernadus and Rochefort stocked by one of our locals.

Unibroue (if we're counting Canada) and Boulevard, as others have suggested. Both have a couple standouts in the style.

Sixth Glass is my favorite American quad (non-BA, non-fruited). Looking at the list of quads I've had, it's amazing how many of the American ones are not traditional quads...or maybe that shouldn't be surprising.

OP, Looking over your ratings it seems you did not like Three Philosophers - that would be my recommendation for something that would likely be in your distribution.

More generally, I have really enjoyed Off Color's Growl - its a solid contribution to the style and I keep some around the house.
